Lyrics

Take me out tonight
Where there's music and there's people
And they're young and alive
Driving in your car
I never never want to go home
Because I haven't got one
Anymore
Take me out tonight
Because I want to see people and I
Want to see life
Driving in your car
Oh, please don't drop me home
Because it's not my home, it's their
Home, and I'm welcome no more
And if a double-decker bus
Crashes into us
To die by your side
Is such a heavenly way to die
And if a ten-ton truck
Kills the both of us
To die by your side
Well, the pleasure - the privilege is mine
Take me out tonight
Take me anywhere, I don't care
I don't care, I don't care
And in the darkened underpass
I thought oh God, my chance has come at last
(but then a strange fear gripped me and I
Just couldn't ask)
Take me out tonight
Oh, take me anywhere, I don't care
I don't care, I don't care
Driving in your car
I never never want to go home
Because I haven't got one, da...
Oh, I haven't got one
And if a double-decker bus
Crashes into us
To die by your side
Is such a heavenly way to die
And if a ten-ton truck
Kills the both of us
To die by your side
Well, the pleasure - the privilege is mine
Oh, there is a light and it never goes out
There is a light and it never goes out
There is a light and it never goes out
There is a light and it never goes out
There is a light and it never goes out
There is a light and it never goes out
There is a light and it never goes out
There is a light and it never goes out
There is a light and it never goes out

"To die by your side is such a heavenly way to die"

The saddest compliment.

One time I was in a coffee shop at 10 at night, during a thunderstorm, when this song came on the radio. I put away what I was doing. I soaked in the experience. I'm pretty sure my life peaked at that moment. The music washed around me, harmonizing with the drama of the thunder and lightning surrounding the shop. All the others in the coffeeshop looked perfectly in place. I at that time was trying to escape an argumentative mother and a family too chaotic to enjoy. For the few minutes this song played, everything made sense.

I love how this song can be romantic, melancholic and happy at the same time

Could not believe hearing my 17yo son singing this today. "That's the Smiths dad" Well yeah I know, I used to play their songs when I was your age! Definite proof their music is timeless.

This sounds even more depressing when you don't actually have a person to think about when you hear it

Brings tears to my eyes. When my dad was not well with cancer he'd hate being in doors so we'd go out for a drive to buy food we didn't even need. I remembered hearing this at the time and, awful driver that he was, thinking : "if I die by his side, what a wonderful way to die". Rest in peace dad.

That was one of my mom’s favorite songs. I always listen to this song, and every time I do, I close my eyes and can recall the great moments I spent with her. The sentence ‘There’s a light that never goes out’ is so powerful. My mother passed away a year ago, but her light will never go out inside my heart. She will always be alive. And this song is a bond between me and her memory

Its not at all depressing, it's one of eternal hope. Also, it's beyond me to explain why British artists capture emotions so perfectly.

This is the song I chose for a boyfriend. We fell in love and I was lucky to have him. Unfortunately, he took his life a year after we started dating, and I wasn't by his side when he died. It's one of my biggest regrets. It's his birthday today and I still listen to it every year.
Happy birthday, R. I love you.

When I started dating with my husband, I was dealing with my parents arguing and fighting with depression and addiction. When on Friday nights he came and picked me by car to go out together, sometimes I was so sad and worried and he was all happy and glowing... and looking at him, sitting in his car, I deeply could relate to these beautiful lyrics. He hadn't a cue about the situation until I managed to share it with him. We have been together for 22 years since then ❤️

I have severe social anxiety. To the point where I didn’t even go to family parties. One day decided to go. Family was singing karaoke and they forced me to sing lol
This is the song that I sang. Everyone was grooving and started dancing. It was a nice memory. If you have social anxiety or depressed. There is a light

Man that lyric gets to me. My only hope is that when I do die, I'm by the love of my life.

I wrote this comment when I just started dating a girl... I'm still with her nearly 4 years later lol

Anyone knows that feeling when you go out and it's sunny outside, you wish you had friends to go out with, but you go alone. You sit on a bench and listen to the song. You feel alone, but grateful. You don't know for what, but you do. You want to love, but you can't, whatever the reasons are.

RIP Andy, your melodic bass was such an integral part of the special sound of The Smiths, thank you for one of the soundtracks of my youth in the 80s ❤️ 😢
