"This Charming Man" was released as the group's second single in October 1983.

Lyrics

Punctured bicycle
On a hillside desolate
Will nature make a man of me yet?
When in this charming car
This charming man
Why pamper life's complexity
When the leather runs smooth
On the passenger's seat?
I would go out tonight
But I haven't got a stitch to wear
This man said "it's gruesome
That someone so handsome should care"
Ah ! A jumped-up pantry boy
Who never knew his place
He said "return the ring"
He knows so much about these things
He knows so much about these things
I would go out tonight
But I haven't got a stitch to wear
This man said "it's gruesome
That someone so handsome should care"
La, la-la, la-la, la-la, this charming man
Oh, la-la, la-la, la-la, this charming man
Ah ! A jumped-up pantry boy
Who never knew his place
He said "return the ring"
He knows so much about these things
He knows so much about these things
He knows so much about these things

Rest in Peace, Andy Rourke. This was one of your finest bass lines.

I don't care if I'm several decades late. My mother's adoration for this band must have passed on through blood, because this. This gets to me like no other music.

I first heard this as a youngster dancing drunk at my sisters wedding in 2006 in Dublin. Asked the DJ what song it was and took a strong mental note to remember the next day. Best discovery I ever made.

My little bro died at 48 to MND. We teased him so much for liking the Smiths. Rest in Peace our charming man. Here's shaking a branch at you.

The opening riff by Johnny Marr is just absolute class. The bassline is superior, Mozzy's voice is haunting. The drumming, what can I say, spot on. A perfect pop song in my opinion.

Edit: Rest In Peace, Andy Rourke.

Welcome to the comment section. It is comprised of memes (mostly ones ragging on Morrissey), people professing their love for this song or the band in general, and that one guy who uses this as a diary.

Andy Rourke has passed away today. His basse lines gave The Smiths their signature groove.
I will listen to the Smiths all day.
😭💗 RIP Andy. Hoy es un día triste.
