A lot of beginning math students are discouraged when they go into a class and don't know the terminology. For example, a professor might say "this is a radical", and some of the students have no idea what a radical is. I've been discouraged like that before. I understand that a teacher can expect his students to already be on a certain level, but maybe they could keep some students interested by handing out a syllabus before class begins with a list of the terms that they need to know for this class explained by people who know how to explain those things. For instance, I had trouble knowing why a negative number multiplied by another negative number on the number line gave you a positive. I later learned to look at the negative symbol as signifying a change in direction on the number line. So, if you change direction, and then changed direction again, you get a positive. Another thing I would tell students if I was a beginning math professor, whether it looks like it or not, mathematics have been enabling us to build roads, buildings, and bridges for centuries. If something doesn't make sense for you, don't try to figure it out. It has been proven that these equations work.
