I'll take a recently arrived immigrant as a neighbor, someone who wants to be here and worked hard to get here and appreciates what this country aspires to be, over a contemptuous, spiteful, narrow-minded, xenophobic, shouty Trump supporter who doesn't appreciate what it is to be an American, any day of the week.

I still don't get how you can get mad at someone for "taking" a job. You can't take a job you get given a job. If I could take a job from someone, it would be a CEO's job, it certainly wouldn't be the guy scrubbing toilets all day.

He's not wrong, and it's not just truck drivers. We've wasted tons of unfarmed vegetables this year cos nobody was harvesting them. I've heard many stories of local lads just not applying for those jobs and those who do apply quitting cos they couldn't hack it.

Someone asked in a comment chain, what does it mean to be an American.

I'll tell you what it should mean. Americans should be loyal to our Constitution, ready to defend, and to inprove upon it by expanding upon the freedoms it already guarantees as we become a more perfect union.

Americans should be loyal to their fellow countrymen, ready to lift them up as we all rise as one.

Americans should be welcoming too and understanding of immigrants, as we are a nation of immigrants, and where would we be if our forefathers were barred from coming here. Every immigrant is a potential loyal American, and every loyal American makes us stronger.

And last but not least, Americans should never give deference to kings, dictators, and wannbe despots, but only ever give deference to the truth, caring about staying informed, so they may make informed decisions about their community, country, and the world, without falling for the propaganda of the power hungry who would destroy our democracy given the chance.
