I collab’d with a pianist from my church. He doesn’t know how to produce but knows how to play the keys. I can play the piano by ear only. I told him how I wanted him to make a melody sound and he got partially there then I played the end part of the melody of how I envisioned it. And we did that melody together in like 10min before going out. I added everything else because I knew how the drums were going to sound and the direction I saw it going.

One thing I can’t stand can is the mofos gatekeepin the hell out of shit in this music shit. It’s one thing that complicates the hell out of music. Someone like Timbaland made the statement that theory is irrelevant. I agree with him. It’s about feeling. Theory should be used yes but it should be a guide, and again, it’s based off ur direction you’re trying to go in based off your feeling. Navie I appreciate that you yourself have cleared that up. Because music should be about fun and dedication. You have that, you’re able to move forward a little more.

I've been a producer for 30 years, and I utilize ALL cheats. For me it's about pushing the "idea" forward in order to achieve the best end results. None of the tools at your disposal is NOT CHEATING!

Facts when I use a loop i imagine it’s the actual beat maker in my studio playing his loop and I am telling my piano guy play me the melody but it’s all me doing what Kanye did. 💪🏾

I sometimes use loops, but I always felt some kinda way about it. This dude puts things into perspective for me, and others like me. This is a good way to look at using loops and samples.

This advice is GOLD! I was once hindered when wondering what I should use and not use. Then I realized, like you say, all the provided presets, sounds and beats in apps and vsts are there so you can take (or "steal") whatever you want! FL Studio, as an example, provides demo songs precisely so you can learn and use anything from them. When I had that light-bulb moment in realizing all this, it was very liberating and freeing. No excuses now!

Those purist who say "theory tools are cheating", "loops are cheating" music or beats most of the time suck and the open minded beat makers who use an array of tools and resources are the one's who are making beats for real rappers and MCs. Being able to use a sick loop for a start or using pre-made samples or one shots as well as being able to write a good melody gives you an edge to be a great beat maker. Use whatever you want F what purist think.

Agreed navie, a lot of people try to be jack of all trades and they end up just wasting their time and becoming mediocre in all they do. I fell into that trap for a long time myself and now I'm just focusing on becoming a better producer these days. Thanks for the reaffirmation.
