Lydia Litvyak is commemorated at the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre, (Film Director Peter Jackson's Museum in Blenheim, New Zealand). The exhibit includes an airworthy Yak 3 and a life size full colour statue of Lydia in her flying suit.

I am making a model of her YAK-1. During my preparation, I found an image of the flower on the cowl of her plane, with one of the petals pointing at the lead exhaust pipe on the left side of the aircraft. The YAK-1 could hold its own against the Bf 109E, but the Bf 109F was a dangerous adversary. She flew a few different YAK-1s including White 23 and Yellow 44. At some point, she was assigned a YAK -1b, which had a more powerful engine and a bubble style canopy, giving her more speed and a better view behind her. It was this aircraft she was flying when she was killed. She was a petite girl, so short that here mechanic had to add blocked to her rudder petals. It is probable that she shot down about three more aircraft than she was officially given credit for including a major ace not mentioned in this video.

Lydia Litvyak deserves a statue be built here in the USA, to commemorate her bravery in WW2. I don't care that she was a soviet pilot. Last I checked, the Soviet were our allies during WW2.

I started playing with the Russian planes of the fantastic game, War Thunder, and I was looking through the customization options seen on World War II USSR aircraft. I saw a symbol of a flower, and it is described as the "white lily, " a symbol used by the best female ace pilot of the war, Lydia Litvyak. I thought to myself, that name sounds familiar. I looked up a mission briefing from another World War II aircraft game I once loved to play, Secret Weapons Over Normandy. It turns out I had heard that name before, as Lydia was a pilot you fly with over the German lines near Stalingrad. I just had to look up her story, and I'm not disappointed. She was an incredible woman, bold as brass, as daring as they come, and one hell of an ace pilot.
