My wife's grandmother lived in Poland during WWII (at ages 12-18). Toward the end of the war, she told of seeing the front-line shift back and forth between the Russians and Germans. She was very clear about one point: As bad as the Germans were, the Russians were worse---and this is even after having witnessed a teen friend being shot and killed by an SS soldier. Among other incidents with the Russians, she told of a friend who had died after being gang raped by them.

It's the same old thing als always: Bring people into a situation where there is nothing to enforce rules, like when you just won a war and the enemy can't stop you from doing whatever you want, and people will split into two groups: Those who still act morally, and those who will do whatever they can get away with.

My granda from Slovakia told me that when Germans came they asked for some food and possible shelter. When Russians came, they took everything they could from their cows, clothes, alcohol, all food etc.

Japanese soldiers did the same to Chinese and Korean women, too. War is all about conquest, not just the land and governance, but the women. Those who survived the mass rape bore the children of the enemies.
