How to Use Shutter Speed, Aperture and ISO For Video

Today we talk about 3 critical video settings that you will find on almost every camera.

Overview of the Settings:

Shutter Speed
Controls how LONG light hits the sensor each second. Also controls motion blur effects.
Saving Private Ryan is a great example of how a fast shutter speed can be used for tension.
The Bourne movies are a great example of slow shutter speeds (when Jason is dreaming/remembering his past).
180 Degree rule explanation.

Aperture
Controls how MUCH light hits the sensor. Also controls depth of field or how much of the shot is in focus.

ISO
Controls the sensitivity (brightness) of sensor. Noise can be introduced at high ISO levels so try to avoid those.

How I Use These Settings:

1) Set shutter speed for desired look (180 rule is applied when I shoot most of the time)

2) Set aperture for desired depth of field.

3) Use ISO to make final exposure changes.

I've been shooting for 3 years but I still watch some basic videos like this to make sure I'm doing it right. Thanks Caleb!

Who needs photography school when this guy shares his knowledge so gracefully. Thanks brother. What a plus and great resource. YouTube one of the best things to come out of the Matrix we live in today. Thanks I follow and learn something every day.

People who do videos about video rarely discuss the basics of setting up your camera, but you just did - thanks. This is probably your most important video in quite a while. I hope your viewers will bookmark this, click the like button and share it.

One of the best explanations I've heard on shutter speed, aperture, and ISO. Simple and clear. Was a headache to try and understand but you made it very easy to grasp and I know what I need to adjust to get the look I'm after. Thank you and keep up the great work!

Side note: If you're shooting on a green screen, you'll want to use a higher shutter speed, to eliminate some of the motion blur. Often 1/80th will suffice.

I'm amazed that 29 people, so far (I'm spelling 'people' i.d.i.o.t.s) have disliked this video. I've been a pro photographer and video maker and teacher for over 35 years, and this is the clearest, most succinct and best delivered instruction on these 3 tricky topics that I have ever seen. Well done!

professional musician here who is filming sunsets, etc to put music to. I was stuck in autofocus and recently wasted an afternoon and a beautiful sunset. (I have good ones as well). I thought it was too complicated to learn this but you made it clear. This is by far the best tutorial I have seen. You have a gift. I subscribed of course.

Just found this video today, I'm just starting to shoot. I have watched like 100 videos in the past week and trying to learn, but for some reason it all kinda clicked when you explained it and for that reason I thank you!

Finally a video that gives a systematic, yet practical, explanation of these three DSLR settings without getting too technical. Far to many videos get into the mathematics and physics of these adjustments. I just want a basic and practical explanation like you gave! Thanks a million!

I don't comment often on Youtube, but this was easily one of the BEST, most informative and digestible tutorials I've ever seen.

Best and easiest explanation and guide to understanding the works of a still camera. I have been a shooter for TV 25 + years and have just recently given in to the new generation of " Video by Still Camera". I have never been a still shooter, so a difficult move from Iris, and ND filters to, Aperture/ISo/Shutter. Thanks
