We're going to go over some specific ways to work with adult snakes to socialize them. Whether you have an abnormally shy snake or a defensive snake, there are a number of things you can do to work with the animal's brain to help them get used to you.

I've been hospitalised for three months with only a few permissions and my boa hisses at me when I handle him until he realises it's me. He's the dumbest animal I own, I love him

My key to my girl's sweetness was patience on my part. I took my time with introducing things into her enclosure and made our handling sessions easy going. I also accidentally made my hair her favorite hide, so now it needs to be down everytime we hang out so she can feel super safe.

Your videos are never to long. I love every second of them. They are so relaxing and entertaining at the same time.

The old timers in the hobby used to say that keeping a snake in a cage where they see you walking by often will eventually result in a rather calm snake, and you do not really have to do much handling at all. I think they were correct. The part they did not know or say was to open the cage door and let the snake investigate of its own choice. The combo of those approaches is good advice. Great subject and excellent demonstration.

I appreciate you pointing out the differences in setup and socialization of an adult snake versus a baby snake. Most videos focus on baby snakes and I don’t think people even realize there are different things to consider with adults. It’s great that you explained why you would use more hides for an adult, rather than just use clutter. Sometimes people just tell others what to do, but explaining the why behind it allows people to think about how and when something should be used so they can adapt to different situations where someone isn’t there constantly telling them what to do.

Outtakes, shenanigans or Kent free roaming towards the table: anything works for me.
Cheers.

Choice based handling is for me, I like to open the door and just sit there and see if she wants to come out, sometimes she does. Then I put her in the playpen for a little enrichment. All this is possible from watching your videos.

Bob, I wrote to you asking this very thing, thanks for this video, very very much.

One of the biggest take aways I got was from something you noted at the end. Having my three year old female rescue for a couple months now, I was certain that I was doing something wrong not handling her. She’s fine. And the little things are helping her feel safe in her new environment and her new home.

Your experience and humor mean so much to me. Thank you very much ❤

None of your videos are too long! I always learn something new that then is super beneficial for my snakes! So thank you!

My oldest male corn has been a lot more relaxed with handling but it's taken well over a year to get to this point, he still isn't fully comfortable with hands but he's out of his biting/thrashing phase and just has the occasional spook.

I received him as a maintenance fed two year old from a small rack, with zero handling, he gets overwhelmed by new experiences so we try to minimise the amount of stimuli he gets, visitors don't handle him, he doesn't roam and he's mostly left in peace, given the more calm and relaxed result I'd say this is working really well for him.

I'm really proud of his progress, it's just a shame how damaging things like this can be when building relationships with animals. Poor keeping is always to blame, never the animal.

We recently introduced new hides to his tank, and he seems very comfortable with those. ❤

This is super helpful! I have two subadult house snakes that are taking longer to get acclimated than the baby snakes I’ve gotten, and it’s reassuring to know that it’s normal for it to take longer to socialize/acclimate an adult than a baby. You’ve given me some good ideas to help them! Also, I love the Stella shenanigans, she’s so cute and it seems like she’s got a fun personality 😄🐍🧡

I love Stella, I love how she always comes over to see you, no matter what you are doing. She's like, "I come see you?" "I come over to you?" "Yep, I come over to you."

You should do a video on how Kent upscales the VHS video to 1080p.

i think a mix of videos where you just get to the point and ones where you kinda meander on is perfect! for more strictly educational stuff about breeding, getting straight to the point might be better, but for stuff that's about snake behavior and human-snake interactions, a more meander-y video is spot on! we get to see he snake behavior better and see the example in addition to just getting the information.

awesome timing lmao, I've just been wanting to do more socialisation/handling work with my adult royal. she's a rehome, very sweet natured but not really used to or comfortable with being handled and I'd love to get her comfy with it. thank you for the vid, love your take on royal python husbandry!
