Hey Adam, do a video on Tap training vs. Target training! I've seen alot of YT Shorts recommending target training lately and I've always been a tap trainer for my highly food motivated species. To me, its better to let the animal know its NOT time to eat than try and trigger a food response in an animal thats already ready to eat.

I was afraid of my BP for almost a year, but he's a real puppy dog. A couple of things I make sure to do is make sure he's VERY familiar with my particular smell(I started by putting him inside my hoodie. He eventually would sleep in my sleeve), and I never put him back in his enclosure stressed out. I always give him a chance to relax if something startles him. These days, he actually sleeps in his crochet hide on my desk most of the day.

First off... (cue Emily voice) 😍😍"
Good points. I know confidence is huge when dealing with dogs, didnt know it was the same with reptiles. Makes sense though.
I love how you always advocate for just do what you need to give quality care and forget about the 'others'. 👌

Many years ago we were given an 8 year old cornsnake by a couple who could no longer take care of it. She came in a 75 gallon tank with a sliding screen lid. She had a strong food drive. My DIL and I did her feedings and we both gotten once. It took a little time to get to know her and one trick we discovered was to open the top and let her start coming out on her own. That way she did not expect food and we could pick her up and handle her with no problem.

I don't have any reptiles yet, but when I do, I know I'm going to want to start out using a hook and maybe gloves. I really really appreciate you saying to do what makes you comfortable to be confident!! Definitely makes me feel better 🥰

I use target training for my snakes, I have found it extremely effective incl for my really food driven ones. I also gently tap the glass before I go in to handle them so they know I am there and I don’t startle them. Not ever been bitten … famous last words 😂

I'm working on taming out my cornsnake. She's doing well and starting to calm down. She doesn't get bitey, just flighty. She's now even not rushing to one of her hides when she's out and I come into the room now. :D

I just got my first hognose a week and a half ago and was hoping for a video like this !! Your channel always has the best info!

Putting my hands in the enclosure everyday to change water and check for waste without trying to handle has calmed all of mine down. I offer my hand to smell. I only handle my snakes max twice/week, usually just once, after they’re comfortable with my presence.

I've owned lizards my whole life ever since I was 14. Never had a problem. Now at 26 I finally bought a ball python a week ago and it's 2 months old and it's very nippy but I want to hold it. So these videos are priceless. Thanks for everything you put out

Love this! Thank you for sharing videos like this. I’ve had my corn snake baby for a month now and have yet to hold him bcz I’m terrified. I’ve been afraid of snakes all my life but since moving to FL I’m around them more so I’ve been working on it. I got Cornholio after a lot of research and I adore him, he’s adorable but haven’t worked up the nerve to pick him up. Thanks again

This was good timing, I bought my first hognose yesterday (I caught a glimpse of you at the reptile expo! Wish I could have left my table to get an autograph), and he's an almost-adult male who hisses and huffs like a steam engine! He's defensive- the whole drive home he was shoving his nose into the side of the container that had my hand over it, we had to weigh him by putting him on the scale while still in his travel container and weigh the empty container later to subtract it, and we had to put him in his new tank by juuuust cracking open the lid of his travel container inside it, closing the doors and just letting him crawl out as he felt like it! 😅I hope he settles in soon and finally gets used to us (currently he's just been buried in his aspen for the last 24 hours, but I'm not surprised). I love hoggies, but I'm pretty nervous of him trying to bite since he's so jumpy!

Hey mate!,

I just bought a childrens python hatchling yesterday and i have an awesome tank for it just a standard small square glass tank. Substrate, hides, fake plants etc. Ive got the heat right for a few days and checked temps constantly. Getting a temp gun tomorrow so i can read surface temps. She is such a sweet girl and got her out of the plastic container shes in and she loved being on my hand she coiled my thumb and wouldnt let go.

Shes a sweetheart! Flicking her tongue in my face and gripping onto my hand. Did this for about 10 mins or so. Then held my hand in the enclosure and let her sus it out and get off my hand in her own time. She very slowly unwound off my hand and went in. She seemed super happy, checked everything out over and over.

She seemed like she wanted to come out though and was almost glass surfacing at times and going round all four sides of the tank etc. She seemed so happy and was up in all the fake plants etc. Found her water bowl and rested her neck in it. Shes so cute! I think i got lucky she seems like the perfect baby. I also picked the biggest and healthiest of the babies and shes the sweetest too! Woo! Im just worried now because shes not come out for 24hrs and i cant seem to find her in the tank. The only place could be shes tucked up in her hide?

According to the paper the breeder gave me she hasnt shed for almost 3 months!!

What the!?

Please help! Im scared shes sick or dying or something lol!

I've got a sub adult female children's python and from day 1 she would constantly strike and show aggression. I couldn't even walk near her enclosure or look in that general direction without her striking and hitting the glass (she got her lip stuck on her tooth a few times and I had to use tweezers to get it unstuck). Got to the point that I got a tub for her which still had heating and all that but I could move it to a quiet area and the plastic wasnt super clear like the glass of the enclosure. Well she somehow managed to escape twice from the tub. Right before I found her the second time, I'd Upgraded a few enclosures and had a Spare big enclosure. I put her in there and she was never struck or anything since. The enclosures are stacked and she is on the bottom so when I'm doing anything with the other enclosure, she can see that I'm there but not actually looking at her. she is finally happy to just sit on her basking ledge allday and not worry about anyone ❤

Not mentioning Lori Torrini's target training is a big miss. It helps a lot, also for the wellbeing of the snake.

I use all your tricks all the time. But I also use 2 other ones. 1st is observation. I observe their behavior for a few days (and 1st feeding) to notice their own tics/body language. And 2nd, I reward good behavior. If my leachie is running everywhere and fleeing, I don't put it back in his enclosure before he calms down. By putting him back too early, I noticed I was encouraging "bad" behavior so I wait until I get the proper response before putting them back

I got a hognose snake 2 weeks ago and I’ve been handling him pretty often but he is very not used to movements in front of him, or even the television freaks him out😂

Great video as always Adam and very great advice. Most my experience is with snakes and my advice for someone who isn't very experienced with snakes and is trying to tame down a defensive snake is: Don't let that discourage you, continue to work with that snake. Use gloves if you need to but most the time it will get easier as that snake or snakes gets used to you. Along the same lines as your advice to be confident and consistent.
