I have the 16 version of this laptop with the Ryzen 7 8840u, but I'm running Linux on it. It runs cool and quiet, the fans rarely kick in, and I'm getting around 8 hours of light/medium use on it. When I first purchased this laptop, I did go through the Windows setup, and I did notice the fans turning on (and staying on) quite a bit. This does not happen in Linux when doing light tasks (browsing, terminal, some YouTube etc...).

I have the previous generation of the 16 inch version (5630) which I got during the summer on sale for only 450 at Micro Center. I noticed that on the new version, they improved on some aspects but worsened on some. Mine has the i5 1335U with only 8 GB of RAM/512 GB SSD and Windows 11 Pro. Unfortunately I didn't do enough research and on the previous generation (mine) the RAM is soldered so it looks like they brought back upgradeable RAM on the newest version as well as the 10-key number pad. Compared to my version, the new version (5640) now has upgradeable RAM, a ten key number pad and it got a Kensington lock slot. I did notice that they downgraded on some aspects, like going from Thunderbolt 4 on mine to regular USB-C on the 5640, and went from Intel Wifi Card to Realtek Wifi Card. The speakers on mine are also slightly more powerful at 5W vs 4W on the new one since they are top firing like on the Plus version.

I haven’t bought a new laptop in over a decade and my current Dell laptop is from 2007. Was thinking about getting a new laptop since it’s been so long but I’m not sure now anymore lol

Yeah, been looking at the 16" version that's on sale with the 8840u. I know it's not the same one, but the noise you shows us Dell may not be managing the fan noise that well. And seeing the reply to the comments in the YT short someone submitted for the exact config I'm looking at confirm this. Dell's just gotten lazy with fan curves. Guess I'm passing on Dell this year.

Hey I´m struggling to decide between the newer Inspirion and the older model in terms of battery life. Maybe any advice?
I know that both are using the I5 1335u, but the newer model has a 3 Cells battery instead of the older 4 Cells. A sales assistant from DELL told me that the older model had some problems with optimization, which i find it quite BS because they use the same processor. I also need to mention that the newer model has a 1TB SSD and 16 GB of memory DDR5 instead of the older model that has only 512GB SSD and 8GB of LPDDR5 RAM.

Any reason why the max SSD capacity in the m.2 is limited to 1 TB?

Also, it can charge via the usb C port, correct? (Provided you have a 65w usb c charger on hand).

Thanks!

I tested the Inspiron 5445 with the basic display (which isn't as bad as 250 Nits sounds) and the low power AMD 8540U CPU thermal management has the same issue: at only 50°C CPU temperature (nearly idle) the fan already starts running with much too high RPMs and is very loud. There is no fan management software available - I thought that's an AMD model issue - but it seems that also the Intel models are affected. The fan noise just drives me crazy so sadly I had to return it. Seems that no one at Dell uses their own products an Dell is forgetting about the basics which would just be a BIOS-Update/Software/Driver to handle the fan behavior correctly...

gunta.
