rest of this post:
They couldn’t believe a 12-year-old would enjoy that book. So I told them we are not going to discuss this again.

Dad said I didn’t have to be so dismissive and that they were only concerned for their grandchild.

Nta YOU SHOULD BE THE ONE CONCERNED. like why do your parents care? Like let him read whatever he wants. Like ask him once and that’s it like you don’t need to be pressuring your own daughter

Wait! They’re concerned he’ll READ??? What kind of non-sense is that??? Being a bookworm is admirable. Learning from reading is something everyone should encourage!!! Who would ever discourage a child from reading and learning?

BTW: NTA! Not at all. Every child should have someone care enough about them to encourage learning. You rock!!!

I was 11 when I started reading philosophy and economics books and completely grasped them, so age isn't the problem

how did they think reading a book about economics was "concerning"? shouldn't they be happy that the child likes to read and learn? ! would they rather he didn't?

When I was 10, I found an old set of Encyclopaedia Britannica at the bottom of a bookcase and it took me 2 years to finish. It was fascinating. In between, since I love sci-fi and fantasy, my aunt sent me the complete works of Lewis Carroll and Edgar Allen Poe. I’ve been a voracious reader and now encouraging nieces and nephews to read too. It’s the best form of relaxation and I already have a library filled to the brim. The boys start with my comics and manga collection while the younger girls start with my Charlie Brown Encyclopaedias for kids.

OP _how dare you_ provide a non-fiction literary classic to your nephew? Are you trying to instill a love of reading or - heaven forbid - *learning* - in the lad? 🙄

normal grandparents would just say "you're just like your aunt/uncle"

As a 13 year old, children are a lot smarter than a lot of people think- im not saying children arent.. silly.. at times, but kids can learn to grasp concepts and usually understand them from a young age

OMG you’re turning him into a bookworm! How could you be destructive???

On the one hand that is a weird thing for a twelve year old to ask for. On the other, his mom is apparently an economist, so you know, he might just be getting that interest from his mom. Which is totally normal! Why do the grandparents not think of that? Do these grandparents not understand children possibly sharing interests with their parents? Or indeed, sharing interests with an uncle who he spends time with. It's not like it's a graphic sex book or anything.

Nta why do they need an explanation as to why he was able to grasp the concept of the book at his age? Some people are just smarter than others. Is that simple maybe he’s an intellectual. It’s crazy that they think wisdom only comes with age and life experiences. Have they never met a person that’s wise beyond their years?

What is the issue with a child reading? Unless its smut, they can read whatever they please. People need to stop holding back their children, just because other kids their age do not do the same things.

Nta I was reading college-level books in the 6th grade and I taught myself how to read when I was young. Knowledge should be wanted and given and they seem to think that's bad. If they keep pestering you say you werent even sure if he would read the book but he asked so he received. You can even mention you haven’t even read that book so why would you encourage him to read that one

And what exactly what is wrong with being a book worm?

It sounds like you’re parents just don’t like you and are worried they won’t like the grandson if he turns out anything like you. Hopefully that’s not it but that’s what it sounds like

Coming from a family of bookworms; those (grand)parents sound awful.
