Why you should not be a data scientist

It's about learning, coding, and generally how to get your sh*t together c:

I've been a FAANG data scientist for over a year now. While that's not a lot of time, I've had the amazing opportunity to work with super star data scientists, be mentored by them, and even start mentoring more junior data scientists! I've learned a lot about what it actually means to be a data scientist. In this video, I talk about why you should not be a data scientist.

🐈‍⬛🐈‍⬛About me
========================
Hi, my name is Tina and I'm a data scientist at a FAANG company. I was pre-med studying pharmacology at the University of Toronto until I finally accepted that I would make a terrible doctor. I didn't know what to do with myself so I worked for a year as a research assistant for a bioinformatics lab where I learned how to code and became interested in data science. I then did a masters in computer science (MCIT) at the University of Pennsylvania before ending up at my current job in tech :)

do you still want to be a data scientist? 🐈

Damn, a data scientist is just someone who is really good at a lot of hard things.

We need to spend less time asking people what they want to be and more time asking them what problems they want to solve, what they want to build, or what kind of value they would like to create.

Daughter had a Romance Languages (French/Spanish) degree, became a math teacher, went to grad school in data science, and is now a data scientist working for a tech company in the Bay Area. In college she did not take CS nor math courses. She did have perfect SAT and ACT Math scores, she loves her job, and beats being a low paid teacher.

I only wanted to become a data scientist so I could buy fancy cat pots to put my plants in.

Instead of dealing with the discomfort of whether I made the right decision, I decided to do a data science PhD so I have peace of mind knowing I made the wrong decision

I've considered data science, but, for me, it'll come down to who wants to use the data and how. A lot of businesses want to use data science to increase profits, but I'm more interested in using data to discover things, help people, etc.

You convinced me! I'm gonna stay a data analyst! 🤓
Loved your perspective on this important topic Tina!! 💙

I've been considering taking a Master Degree in Data Science and Business Analytics and I was wondering what's like being a Data Scientist until I found your video!! Thanks YouTube and thanks Tina! I have more idea now!

As someone who transferred from data science to data analysis I agree with every point here. Being in the everlasting learning process was particularly exhausting😅 Not that data analysis needs no learning but the intensity ds requires is of another level.

I just started my data science learning journey about a week ago. I had a very rough idea of what it involved but this video was extremely informative and just confirmed for me that data science definitely plays into a lot of my strengths. You've pretty much reinforced my decision and have motivated me more to continue learning. Thank you!

This got me so excited to be a data scientist - always learning (in different fields) and getting to continue being a scientist!!. It sounds great!

A data scientist for 7+ yrs... First time someone said the truth... I find a lot of juniors thinking data science is just coding and it is so hard explaining them the truth.. yes... Stats, coding, business.. but most important... Constant learning and marketing ur work...

I am not totally sure about whether or not I want to be a Data Scientist. The interest towards learning has been kind of gradual for me. But for now I can say that my inclination is more on the side of Data cleaning, Data modelling and Data visualisation. I might probably end up somewhere close to being a Data Analyst, Can't imagine beyond that for now. Checked for all points that you mentioned. Bang on. Except for the last one - Marketing one's own work. I am someone who believes strongly in my work speaking for myself rather than otherwise. Have been trying hard to change this mindset of mine. Might take a while but will get to it definitely. Thanks for this informative one. Helped me clear my mind about certain things. See you on the next livestream.

This is the video that inspired me to start my Data Science journey. I finished my first semester and am about to finish my summer sem. So far it’s been a blast. Thank you so much for helping me find my passion

Great video, Tina. Personally, I just entered the Data Analyst field. As a form of continuous learning, I’m studying DS in my free time. My hope is I can integrate my studies into actual application at work, even without an official Data Scientist position.

I'm gonna be a Data Scientist!! My bachelor's is in Business Analytics and my master's will be in Advanced Data Analytics!!

I totally agree with you. I'm in R&D(not exactly in Data Science but almost similar) and my skills are constantly challenged(Programming, Stats, Business). I realised that without the neck to troubleshoot problems for hours, being thrown in the deep end to come up with solutions and learning new tech skills fast can be frustrating. I'm from a Maths and Physics background, so it was a fairly easy transition. Money is a need, but i do what i do because i enjoy it.
Great channel, subscribed.
