And while I often recommend taking a more slow and steady approach because getting lean takes time, there are situations where we can lose body fat faster. Many people including myself prefer to start a dieting phase with more aggressive fat loss and then use that momentum for switching to a more sustainable rate of losing weight. Also, if you’re at a high body fat percentage it can be very motivating to lose body fat faster and see progress sooner.

I have never heard this advice given this way before. I had heard of protein fasting and diet breaks but having just one day of the lean protein/veg and the idea of leveraging the weekend are original.

Finding meals that you enjoy is one of the most important thing. Also training myself just to eat when I am actually hungry took a long time to become a habit. Overeating just to eat is too easy now and days.

Good recipes are great to lose bodyfat. Plenty of ‘anabolic’ recipes that actually taste good… I lose about 30lb doing the whole ‘oatmeal, chicken, brown rice, broccoli’ all day every day… but when I had surgery, I slipped to old bad eating habits because it was easier and gained 15lb back. Lost 7lb since that weight gain because I’ve found great tasting recipes with high protein, high volume, low calories. Feels a lot more sustainable because I look forward to eating my meals

Really good tips Mario. I highly appreciate that you advocate incorporating maintenance phases after aggressive dieting. A big problem many people face is rebounding after losing weight. Maintenance phases will help them to keep that fat off for good.

Another thing you can do is to have portioned snacks throughout the week rather than a dedicated “cheat day” if you don’t want to eliminate junk food completely. I found that following the 80-20 rule (90-10 rule for me sometimes), where you eat 80-90% healthy food and 10-20% whatever you want, I don’t really have cravings on the weekend or most other days. Following this still makes me lose weight each week (about 1.75 to 2 pounds)

If I go 100% healthy diet then I might succumb to junk food or overeating. It’s not the end of the world, but it does make me feel physically shitty.

Thank you Mario, i do appreciate your vlogs a lot. It’s almost impossible to lower my calorie intake to less than 2000 kcal/day, and i’m not overeating (fats and carbohydrates) at all. Usually it’s like 2400-2500, but eating less would mean that i cannot eat any fruits or slices of my daily 4 slices of bread any longer. I’m a 51 years old, well muscled man but with some belly fat i’d like to lose, eating less would be unhealthy imo.

I definitely fall into the weekend category. Kids have a way of imprisoning me in the house. Soon as we find a way to get around the Covid we will be more active.
