Lyrics:

You got a fast car
And I want a ticket to anywhere
Maybe we make a deal
Maybe together we can get somewhere
Any place is better
Starting from zero, got nothing to lose
Maybe we'll make something
Me, myself, I got nothing to prove

You got a fast car
And I got a plan to get us out of here
I've been working at the convenience store
Managed to save just a little bit of money
Won't have to drive too far
Just across the border and into the city
And you and I can both get jobs
Finally see what it means to be living

See, my old man's got a problem
He lives with the bottle, that's the way it is
He said his body's too old for working
His body's too young to look like his
So Mama went off and left him
She wanted more from life than he could give
I said, somebody's got to take care of him
So I quit school and that's what I did

You got a fast car
Is it fast enough so we can fly away?
Still gotta make a decision
Leave tonight or live and die this way

So I remember when we were driving, driving in your car
Speed so fast, I felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us
And your arm felt nice wrapped around my shoulder
And I-I, had a feeling that I belonged
I-I had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone

You got a fast car
We go cruising to entertain ourselves
You still ain't got a job
So I work in the market as a checkout girl
I know things will get better
You'll find work and I'll get promoted
And we'll move out of the shelter
Buy a bigger house and live in the suburbs

So I remember when we were driving, driving in your car
Speed so fast, I felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us
And your arm felt nice wrapped around my shoulder
And I-I, had a feeling that I belonged
I-I had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone

You got a fast car
I got a job that pays all our bills
You stay out drinking late at the bar
See more of your friends than you do of your kids
I'd always hoped for better
Thought maybe together you and me would find it
I got no plans, I ain't going nowhere
Take your fast car and keep on driving

So I remember when we were driving, driving in your car
Speed so fast, I felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us
And your arm felt nice wrapped around my shoulder
And I-I, had a feeling that I belonged
I-I had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone

You got a fast car
Is it fast enough so we can fly away?
Still gotta make a decision
Leave tonight or live and die this way

Will never forget 1989, watching my little 10" tv in my college dorm watching Tracy Chapman perform her song live on the grammys, just her and a guitar. Great songs live forever. Good job on your version LC.

I love both versions, but only Tracy’s version can bring me to tears. My husband and I were both raised by alcoholics and I can feel her emotion in the song.

Thank you Luke Combs. This song is a stepping stone in my life now. I have been sober 51 days now and this is my motivation song. Thank you even though we will never meet.

I could not play this enough when I heard it. So amazing when an artist from one genre covers a song from a different genre. Love collaborations from different genres, all walks of life, different races . I fucking love different races coming together. It's beautiful

Tracy Chapman proves what a genius she is. I sob every time I listen to these lyrics. Luke does it justice. Not changing any lyrics so it hits so hard.

This is a nice cover and definitely brings a new feel. And, more than anything, i think it shows the power of the original and of Tracy Chapman’s lovely songwriting. Nice work. 🎉

I'm a child of the 80s so Tracy Chapman's original version of this song speaks to me. While I still prefer her version better, Luke did an excellent job with this rendition. People may complain about cover songs but many times it's a way to deliver a really great song to a new generation that never heard it before.

Lowkey like this version more. It doesn't make me cry.

‘Still Gotta Make A Decision, Leave Tonight Or Live And Die This Way’, weighs heavy on a lot of people. If not all people in this world, it probably comes to mind at least once in everybody’s life. I think this is why this song (whether sung by Tracey Chapman or Luke Combs) resonates with me and so many others.

I recently spoke with a stranger as part of a business call I made and she recommended I listen to this song when she heard my last name and I'm so glad she pointed me this direction ❤️
