(Lyrics)
[Verse 1]
You got a fast car
And I want a ticket to anywhere
Maybe we make a deal
Maybe together we can get somewhere
Any place is better
Startin' from zero, got nothin' to lose
Maybe we'll make something
Me, myself, I got nothin' to prove

[Verse 2]
You got a fast car
And I got a plan to get us out of here
I've been workin' at the convenience store
Managed to save just a little bit of money
Won't have to drive too far
Just across thе border and into the city
And you and I can both get jobs
Finally see what it mеans to be livin'
[Verse 3]
See, my old man's got a problem
He live in the bottle, that's the way it is
He said his body's too old for working
His body's too young to look like his
So Mama went off and left him
She wanted more from life than he could give
I said, somebody's got to take care of him
So I quit school and that's what I did

[Pre-Chorus]
You got a fast car
Is it fast enough so we can fly away?
Still gotta make a decision
Leave tonight or live and die this way

[Chorus]
So I remember when we were driving, driving in your car
Speed so fast, I felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us and your arm felt nice wrapped around my shoulder
And I, I, had a feeling that I belonged
I, I, had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone

[Verse 4]
You got a fast car
We go cruising and entertain ourselves
You still ain't got a job
So I work in the market as a checkout girl
I know things will get better
You'll find work and I'll get promoted
And we'll move out of the shelter
Buy a bigger house, live in the suburbs

[Chorus]
Said I remember when we were driving, driving in your car
Speed so fast, I felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us and your arm felt nice wrapped around my shoulder
And I, I, had a feeling that I belonged
I, I, had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone

[Verse 5]
You got a fast car
I got a job that pays all our bills
You stay out drinking late at the bar
See more of your friends than you do your kids
I'd always hoped for better
Thought maybe together you and me would find it
I got no plans, I ain't goin' nowhere
Take your fast car and keep on driving

[Chorus]
So I remember when we were driving, driving in your car
Speed so fast, I felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us and your arm felt nice wrapped around my shoulder
And I, I, had a feeling that I belonged
I, I, had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone

[Instrumental Break]
[Outro]
You got a fast car
Is it fast enough so we can fly away?
Still gotta make a decision
Leave tonight or live and die this way

Oh the nights ignite like gasoline
And light up those streets that never sleep when the sky goes dark
Out where the wild things are

I'm leaving this comment here so after a month or a year when someone likes it, I get reminded of this song ❤

Best part: didn't change a word of the original song. That's genuine homage to the person who created it, and should be appreciated as such.

My dad passed away from cancer a few weeks back. I dropped out of college to take care of him. Was a drinker growing up, only saw him on the weekends. I'd never thought I'd hear something that so perfectly encapsulated the last few years of my life in so few words. Can't tell you how many times I wished I could've left the situation, and I almost wish I could have it back. Can't stop crying to this song, damn it.

I grew up loving this song. It was an instant classic. Never thought anyone else could do it justice. I was wrong. I was so proud hearing Luke sing this.

A well written song can be sung by all genres. Excellent cover to Tracy Chapman's classic.

This is one of the best covers ever. Takes your breath away a little. And I love how he keeps the line about getting a job in the market as a check-out girl. Kind of a subtle homage to Tracy. But there it is.

"Leave tonight or live and die this way..." Glad to see this tune back at the top. Some songs transend generations. I still have this vinyl. Chapman is a poet - a pure spirit. Luke hits all the right notes.

This is one of my favorite songs ever and I always thought no one else could do this song justice except Tracy Chapman. When I heard Luke sing it I got goosebumps because he knocked it out of the park.

Saddest song ever written because it's true for so many and will always continue to be true.

He knew it was perfect and it didn't need changing. Now, a whole generation knows about Tracy Chapman and what an amazing artist she is. The songs no one ever heard are better than this one. She is such an amazing writer. Her poetry is phenomenal.
I absolutely adore this remake.

Im not into country but this cover is really good. Being born in the early 90s, I never thought this song would make a comeback.
