(Lyrics)
[Verse 1]
You got a fast car
And I want a ticket to anywhere
Maybe we make a deal
Maybe together we can get somewhere
Any place is better
Startin' from zero, got nothin' to lose
Maybe we'll make something
Me, myself, I got nothin' to prove

[Verse 2]
You got a fast car
And I got a plan to get us out of here
I've been workin' at the convenience store
Managed to save just a little bit of money
Won't have to drive too far
Just across thе border and into the city
And you and I can both get jobs
Finally see what it mеans to be livin'
[Verse 3]
See, my old man's got a problem
He live in the bottle, that's the way it is
He said his body's too old for working
His body's too young to look like his
So Mama went off and left him
She wanted more from life than he could give
I said, somebody's got to take care of him
So I quit school and that's what I did

[Pre-Chorus]
You got a fast car
Is it fast enough so we can fly away?
Still gotta make a decision
Leave tonight or live and die this way

[Chorus]
So I remember when we were driving, driving in your car
Speed so fast, I felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us and your arm felt nice wrapped around my shoulder
And I, I, had a feeling that I belonged
I, I, had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone

[Verse 4]
You got a fast car
We go cruising and entertain ourselves
You still ain't got a job
So I work in the market as a checkout girl
I know things will get better
You'll find work and I'll get promoted
And we'll move out of the shelter
Buy a bigger house, live in the suburbs

[Chorus]
Said I remember when we were driving, driving in your car
Speed so fast, I felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us and your arm felt nice wrapped around my shoulder
And I, I, had a feeling that I belonged
I, I, had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone

[Verse 5]
You got a fast car
I got a job that pays all our bills
You stay out drinking late at the bar
See more of your friends than you do your kids
I'd always hoped for better
Thought maybe together you and me would find it
I got no plans, I ain't goin' nowhere
Take your fast car and keep on driving

[Chorus]
So I remember when we were driving, driving in your car
Speed so fast, I felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us and your arm felt nice wrapped around my shoulder
And I, I, had a feeling that I belonged
I, I, had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone

[Instrumental Break]
[Outro]
You got a fast car
Is it fast enough so we can fly away?
Still gotta make a decision
Leave tonight or live and die this way

I'm 62 yrs old now, I was dating my husband when this song was released. We were two black people trying to make it in the world. We didn't come from money but we had good values within us. We used to listen to this song while riding around on Friday nights talking about our dreams. We could relate to the song about wanting to get away and just start fresh. Today we're living our dreams in our golden years. I didn't know there was a remake of it until looking at my phone and I listen to the country version by Luke Combs . I can still see why it's on Billboards and he did a good job. I teared up justing listening to it thinking about our struggles when we were young with only a high school education facing the world. We're first time grandparents and our kids are doing great.

The original reminded me of my situation as a teenager. Life was hard. My dad didn't want to grow up. I couldn't save him so I saved myself.

I love this song. He didn't change the lyrics. Respect.

I enjoy the fact that Luke didn't change the lyrics, he's still singing in the perspective of a woman and I think that's really respectful to Tracy Chapman's work. ❤

A song that’s so full of hope and yet be so heartbreaking at the same time. Beautiful rendition.

Both Tracy and Luke do this song justice. Tracy wrote such a beautiful and relating song to others. Myself included. They both made great renditions of this song. I love them both so much.

This was my sons (now 26 yrs old) favorite song (the original) when he was only 3 yrs old. I had to play it all the time. He still loves it. He recently made a playlist for our road trip, and of course it was on there. The song will always have a special place in my heart for more reasons than one. It's simply amazing.

I love Luke's version as well! He did a great job covering it and I'm so glad he didn't change the lyrics.

The greatest thing Luke did was introduce this song to a new generation. You know they're all going back and listening to the original version, and I'm glad for that.

It's a great song that really brings on all the feelings.

I love both versions of this song. It’s sadness, hope and desperation all wrapped together. So much for some of us to relate to.🥹

Song of the Year went to Tracy Chapman last night at the CMA Awards with "Fast Car." Written & originally released by Chapman on April 6, 1988. The song peaked at #6 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1988 & again hit the charts in 2023 when country singer Luke Combs released it, hitting #2 on Billboard Hot 100 & #1 on Country Airplay chart. When it hit #1 on the country chart in 2023, it became the 1st time a Black woman hit #1 with a solo composition.

Wow, that was a great cover of a great song! Well done, Luke Combs. I don't know anything about country music, but I just read that Tracy Chapman took home the award for song of the year for his cover. I'm really pleased to hear that. This song has touched a lot of people. I remember when it first came out.

the fact that he didn't gender swap the lyrics (which happens a lot on covers) was impressive... just sang the song as it was written and had the most impact on him

I never knew how powerful and wonderful this tune was till I sat and read the lyrics. Great rendition by Luke of a fantastic song by Tracy. Lets get along, like we do here in East Texas.
