Senior Tory Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg has lost his North East Somerset seat in the general election.

The former leader of the House of Commons lost to Labour's candidate by around 5,000 votes. He was defending a majority of 14,729.

The seat, which has been subject to boundary changes this year and renamed to North East Somerset and Hanham, was won by Labour's Dan Norris.

New MP Norris said he had “got Mogg-xit done” after defeating his Tory opponent.

Rees-Mogg joins a number of senior Tories who have lost their seats in a humiliating set of results for the party.

Watching The Mogg has been very entertaining, like time travel to the 1700s.

Will miss Jacob -he is always polite, courteous, humorous and speaks sense. These virtues are in short supply in Parliament.

Say posh, bla bla, whatever you want but you can't fault Jacob for being defeated gracefully. Nice change ! Take note MPs

And that's the civilised & educated way to conduct yourself in public office. If only we had more such people in the country. You can see from some of the comments below, unfortunately his opponents are much the opposite.

Real gentleman. Gracious in defeat. Always been an admirer of Mr Jacob Rees Mogg.

Increasingly, I find him to be a thoroughly decent, gracious, and principled person. I wish people would look past the accent and the left-right vitriol. He is a dedicated MP, targeted to detract attention from that.

To be fair that was a pretty gracious bow out speech but there will always be a lot of anger over what Mogg has done over the past few years. He's a nasty individual at heart.

This is not gracious at all, he has called the outcome a "disaster". It is therefore an insult disguised as magnanimity.

What a great loss such an man.
Some of the comments about Jacob have been a disgrace. Had he been black people would be accused of racism. He would have been a great PM.

Not democracy is it though…. If we truly had democracy then we would have proportional representation.

PMs may come and go, but as long as Larry the cat is there, there will always be an England.

A sad day for Somerset and Great Britain. A man of principal, common sense and good manners has been rejected because of his party’s many failures.

This is what it is to be civilised. Have your point of view. Exercise your right to discourse. But when it is all said and done they serve by the will of the people. When the people decide that they don’t like how they are being represented they can elect someone else. This is democracy. The democracy given to so many other countries. The democracy corrupted by so many other countries. This man above all else was a servant of democracy.
