My Stihl 029 with 20" bar will cut great at the tip but not closer into the saw. At the tip I get nice chips and the saw just falls through the log without me pushing down on it but back closer to the saw it feels like it is hitting something and will just not dig in and bite into the log. Of course when I push it then starts to cut a little crooked but I still cannot get it to really bite. I check the bar and the only thing I see is right out next to the tip the edges are rolled out just slightly but everything looks good back closer to the saw. What am I missing? PS - The rakes are down and the chain has just been sharpened. I am cutting dry logs ranging from softer hardwoods like ash and polar all the way to the oaks and hard maples. It cuts the harder woods better than the softer wood. Engine seems to have normal power and is not the issue.

You didn't say the guide rail wear is the major reason for crooked cutting. Once this happens on one side, you can flip the bar over and re install

If the chain's teeth have been sharpened at different angles and/or depths it can also cause the bar to wander.

so basically just go spend money to replace parts, no suggestions about fixing it yourself.
