My dad gave me the one he used when he was in the military I had put water in it and it sat in the water bottle for like a day and it already grew mold it smells so bad even after scrubbing it clean like 8 times it still smells

I remember I found one of these that was my dad's. I washed it with soap and water, then put water in it to drink that day. I was throwing up for about a week after that.

Imagine the look on my face when after a 6 mile ruck, I reach for my canteen, just to realize the cap was only screwed on 98% instead of 100.1% and it's contents had slowly leaked all over my main pack. Those canteens have probably been the death of people

I was in the United States Marine corps now when it comes to canteens you have to understand Marines get hand-me-downs from the army yes I washed my canteen thoroughly I would put about a quarter amount of water in the canteen and freeze that sucker cuz I was stationed in an f in desert in the water tasted great

After getting your gear it is best to rinse the canteen about six times with hot water.

Then fill them about a 1/4 full of bleach and water.
Shake shake shake.
Let sit for 15 minutes.
Then shake shake shake.
Empty and repeat the rinse cycle.

Leave them open to air out.

As soon as I got mine, I'd nail them with that boiling water and bleach-- and still never trust them to drink out of.
Gents, I definitely recommend investing in your own water bottle, just like he covered with investing in his own kneepads in a recent video.

In ROTC summer camp I filled my canteen with Rockstar energy and now they don't sell energy drinks at that camp no more.
