Stop saying the iPad needs MacOS!

I keep finding myself in arguments with my colleagues about the iPad. So prove my point, I used the new M2 iPad Pro and Davinci Resolve to edit a video.

I think there’s a lot of people who mean “iPadOS should be more like MacOS rather than iOS” when they say “iPad needs MacOS”. Apple has clearly been very slow to empower iPadOS.

An iPad is only as good as the App Store. iPad limitation is due to the App Store. The same can’t be said for the Mac 💻

I want to say that I love that this channel is not just spec comparing but actually testing the devices in ways that people who already know the specs want to hear and see and that the ultimate statement of the videos is not only what you already think to yourself when reading the titles.

For years I would like to have the ability to do software development on the iPad as easily as I do on my Mac. There was a move towards it with Swift Playground having some of the capabilities of Xcode, but it just stalled and never matured to anything beyond playfulness. I still lack comprehensive editors and IDEs like Visual Studio Code and the JetBrains suite. I also think that some software development workflows lean a lot on switching between apps and having them side-by-side, which means that iPadOS needs to improve its multi-tasking capabilities to allow to do this more conveniently. I also use a lot of community tools which I think would mean that the barrier to create an app will need to be lowered for an iPad work-env to be as lively as a desktop one. I can't work without brew. This can either be sandboxed or managed system-wide somehow, but this needs to be solved. And I'm all for what you're saying with not having macOS on the iPad. It's just that iPadOS needs to improve to accommodate these very real requirements, or introduce software development workflow alternatives that solve the same basic needs. For instance the graphical flow editor of Unreal Engine can be amazing to work with on the iPad.

It should be able to *switch* to a MacOS-like interface, especially when docked with an external mouse and keyboard. This is easier to do than ever with USB-C hubs.

I think the Steam Deck is a good concept for what the iPad could be: a streamlined interface with a full desktop os system that you don't have to deal with if you don't want to

I'd love to see more ipad (even iphone) videos focused on creativity use-cases; photo editing, 3d modelling, audio production. and see where the strengths and limitations of the hardware and software are. This series is so great, good going Horst!

My ipad is simply just a glorified PDF viewer/editor honestly. I use it for sheet music so, reading scores, writing music, editing music, the list goes on. All the extra trinkets that have been introduced I hardly use and really are just a drain on my battery life as it turns out. The most 'techy' my iPad use has gotten is controlling a presentation and reading my notes in separate apps with the splitscreen ability

The problem with the iPad is that iPadOS is annoying to do many basic tasks. Apple intends that annoyance unfortunately. They call it a simpler experience for the everyday user. The problem is the iPad Pro is intended for "Pros" (whether that's Professional or prosumer... that's a different question).

From a software developer perspective, the iPad Pro isn't a "pro" device without XCode and Homebrew and the like. And probably root access. It's just a locked down toy that Apple doesn't actually let you use for real purposes.

For professional photography or audio or the like it could be fine with the right apps; though I'm not personally familiar with the state of that.

It drives me crazy that YouTubers all think that "Pro" has to mean "for video editing". There are MANY professional uses for iPad and 99% of them are NOT editing videos.

It’s clear that the only correct option is to put ipadOS on the mac

NO! The iPad can run MacOS so it should be able to! I own the device, I get to decide what I run on it. Especially if it's an iPad *_Pro._* Apple can't put artificial barriers between my iPad's capabilities.

Update: It baffles me how Apple users will defend Apple no matter how much they take away their capabilities.
Update 2: I will gladly die on this hill. 🗿

I think they could merge both. The touch integration into MacOS, and the full fledged computer systems into iPadOS, so they are one and the same, and toggles for interfaces and stuff that could also be automatic when you remove it from the keyboard.

As many others have said, the option to launch a MacOS mode would be nice. I would certainly be much more interested in taking a look at an iPad if they did this. Especially when my 12 inch retina macbook finally kicks the bucket.

I don't own a Samsung tablet, but I know they have a feature called Samsung Dex. When you use it your tablet's os turns into a windows like mode. I think it would be great if the iPad had such a feature where it could switch between ios and some form of mac os. Best of both worlds with the only caveat being the iPad may need more storage to accommodate the new os.

We need a DeX counterpart from the Apple side, it's so good on all of my Galaxies that I've had. I've been thinking about this for a long time since I also owned an iPad since the 2nd gen

As you said, it's the small things like mouse support and icons that mean we run into issues. What macs also have is a life beyond software support- and with the addition of drive support and vlc player, word, excel, etc the ipad is a lot closer to having that as well. but until we're fully there I fear many functioning usable devices will end up as E-waste.

In fairness to the Davinci app, the speed editor is a great addition if you want that speed back!
If you want to keep editing but feel like you slow down, I can recommend it. And it comes with a studio Resolve and Fusion key too for your Mac/PC/Linux!

While it’s cool that this is more geared towards content creation, not every apple user is a content creator. I see nothing wrong if they keep iPad OS as a tablet mode kinda like how windows 8 was supposed to be but executed apple style, and then have a Mac OS mode if you want to use a more complete OS and connect a keyboard and trackpad.
