Parentheses ( ) or Brackets [ ] when do you use either one. They don’t serve the same purpose.

You can also use [sic] after a written mistake if the word is there, but the wrong version of it is used. An example would be using the wrong homophone or form of a word.

You can also use brackets when writing about something someone else said.

Say you interview Billie Eilish about Nicki Minaj’s reception of her new song, and Billie says, “She really likes the new song.”

When writing and referencing this quote, you could say, “Billie Eilish says in our most recent interview, ‘[Nicki Minaj] really likes the song.’”

This replaces “She” with “[Nicki Minaj], ” indicating the original quote isn’t exact, but the brackets tell you what she means in the original quote without all the context.

In England we don’t really use the word parenthesis. Both of these are called brackets but the one other right is are called square brackets.
