My teachers never told use about braces and brackets or which comes first. So as a soon to be 10th grader i was glad when someone had a well explained video about it. Its very appreciated thank you.

Thanks!

As you can imagine, some of us that work blue collar jobs have NEVER had to use 90% of the stuff we learned in school.

Unfortunately, when the kids come home with homework, looking to us to help them, it can be a little embarrassing when we can't remember how to do it, lol.

It's nice to be able to have a refresher course. Thanks again for posting. This was a huge help.

Plz Plz explain when using the order of operations/pemdas... Parens first, why this answer is not 48 - - -

''60/5[1+1(1+1)]''
60/5[2(2)]
60/5(2*2)
12*4=48   ✖️✖️

60/5[1+ 1(2)]...correct? --
60/5[1+ (1*2)] so #2 equatn
60/5[1+ (2)] [in brackets]
60/5(3) -separated
12*3=36✔️✔️ b4 solved-
to M by #1
equatn?

If so, where is that rule? Seems like this makes your point of changing the entire problem? I'm confused.
If not, where did I go wrong? TY

Thanks for teaching me about this! If you were my teacher then I will like going to school, thanks you. This is the 1st 5th grade standard for me so because of you, I can go ahead and beyond. Great Explantion! You earned a sub!

For each step, is it acceptable to reduce the grouping symbols each time, meaning step two, use parentheses and brackets, and step three just use parentheses? The equation still makes sense, I'm just starting with the simplest symbols first

This is directly from the horse's mouth: ISO 80000-2-7.15 "It is recommended to use only parentheses for grouping, since brackets and braces often have a specific meaning in particular fields. Parentheses can be nested without ambiguity."
But why bother with international standards?

Quick question, can a brace, or bracket, be inside itself, like if one big brace had another brace in the brace?

I only wanted to understand the difference between parentheses, brackets and braces. It's still unclear. Because they can use the same word like 'aaa': round aaa, squared aaa and curly aaa. I still can not understand why you need three different words.
