It shows that his bitterness wasn’t from being an infirm pawn in the twilight of his life, but rather from a more innate place. Good acting

Tony was really hurt by Junior's varsity athlete comment and Dickie didn't like it either, Junior projected too much insecurity at Dickie's success, this shows us how close Dickie was to Tony and why Tony put Christopher under his wing.
