We'll be doing my first trip to South Lake Tahoe from the Bay Area in our family 2016 Tesla Model X. See how we experienced massive heat and the car ended up overheating where we were only driving 20 miles and hour on the freeway.

Had the same issue going from Walnut Creek to LA. Same model MX too. It over heated and took forever to charge (max at 80 miles) and car throttled down to 40-20 mph. The slow down on the freeway was very scary. It was super hot with temps at 110+.. On the way back, left at 2 am to avoid the heat. Never again will I take the car on a long drive. Too many stops. Tesla was no help when I called for help.

Did you try going into Service Mode to check the battery health/temperatures? Appreciate the video! Keep it up.

Cool video, her are some tips

1. Use the energy meter on the instrument panel.
2. Use percentage, not km/miles.
3. Use service menu when feeling something is wrong, check the alerts.
4. Charging in extreme heat will effect the charge session when cabin-ac is turned on simultaneously. It will prioritize the powertrain/battery
5. Charging these older models is not the same as the newest models (just the tech getting old)

Have fun with your trips 👍✌️

The temp may have been too much. But, I don’t even drive anything older than 4 years old, anymore. Gas or electric. This X was deep in its infancy stages for this model and I would have gotten rid of it a long time ago. Just the battery tech alone, would be worth getting a new one. And it should get double the mileage coming home; because coming down from Tahoe is all downhill. I’ve left Reno and gotten to Sacramento with more fuel mileage than I left Reno with, because it was mostly coasting.

If you can’t pronounce placerville correctly don’t come to Tahoe

My car slowed down on me going to Vegas super scary I had it in chill mode than I switched it to standard and it started to pick up when I pressed the gas

You need to look at car power meter to see what was going on in that stretch where it limited power so much. Limiting to 20 mph usually men’s battery is very close to 0% juice left.

I once got a warning message on my ‘22 Model Y LR at 12% battery and 40 degrees outside temperature, that “Reduced power may be experienced.” After that, I decided not to push below 25% battery under cold weather conditions. It appears that high temperatures may have similar problems.

I never went down below 18% there are so many chargers around here in California you can always reroute to a different one when you’re down 20% that’s a risk when you are driving 25 on a freeway. I just sold my Tesla, couldn’t take the stress of flat tires, wear and tear of tires, charging in a Supercharger. Just didn’t fit into my lifestyle.

I bet if you change display to percent it would have read 0%

Your car behavior is not normal even in 100F heat. I have 2015 model S 90D, same battery and we live in Houston with hot and humid climate, car supercharges fine, up 100 kw at 50% or so and then slowing down some, but still getting 55 kw at 80%. You may have an issue with cooling system. I would schedule appointment with Tesla to look into it.

It’s actually better to stop more often and charge faster
