Work & family balance-

This is the struggle that all professionals face but for this conversation it was focused on Special Operations to illustrate the common factors we all face as humans trying to find the balance.

The balance is a mystical thing that very few of us have and even fewer actually know we should be trying to find it.

When your passion becomes your purpose and ultimately becomes your primary source for providing for your family, it often takes on a different dimension and that’s where both worlds collide.

Your work schedule isn’t allowing time for your family because it takes a lot of training time to mitigate the risk or further develop your skillset.
You’re almost living opposing lives from your family for weeks, months or even years because that’s what the job requires, i.e. Military, Police, Fire, Doctors and the list goes on.

You must develop a dial and not a switch, using your time wisely and being able to detach the two worlds will allow you the opportunity to fully focus on one thing at a time.

This requires active participation on dialing up your focus and intensity for whatever should be the primary focus, when it’s family, make them your total priority because you don’t have the free time to waste.
When it’s time to focus at work, be an absolute professional without distractions, you’ll start feeling fulfilled on both fronts and not sacrificing one for the other.

At the end of the day, we are all struggling with the same thing and no matter how successful you might be, we can’t buy more time.
Invest in developing dials, not switches, learn from my mistakes.

“The only reason I’m here is because my wife packed the parachute“. I wonder if DJ understands exactly how powerful that statement is.

Not an SF guy, but damn that world is really a single man’s game. It’s no joke when other soldiers say, it’s not a job it’s a way of life

“The only reason we’re still together is my wife packed a parachute.” Classic. 🔥

This is the side most people don’t see or hear talked about going into it. You have to be dedicated to the profession otherwise you leave room for error especially when operating at such a high level as DJ. I respect the guys that do it and/or pursue that career path but all the reasons stated are why I’m transitioning out the military. All the accolades in the world don’t trump time with your kids. They deserve that more than anybody.

That closing statement is one the deepest things you’ve ever said. Unbelievable how much that resonates across community.

Weeks and even months. You never truly notice until it's all done. That is to say, when YOU'RE done. I came home from my last trip and had a day with my wife then somewhere in that weekend I emotionally left SF. I dropped my retirement packet the following Monday and 4 months later it dawned on me how much time I lost. I wouldn't trade the journey for anything but it's worth realizing that most of us can only live one life at a time; thriving in special operations means you're probably not thriving at home.

We refer to that as the "domestic deployment" when you come home every day and still never really see your family.

Having a family in special operations is insane. The dudes deserve a family, but its not fair to the family.

Army, regardless of position, is hard on families! Law enforcement is the same, too.

Depends. Special ops have their entire schedule set out a year in advance. It doesn’t change. You know exactly what days are busy, slow or off.

Thanks for sharing something with us, DJ, that most civilians never, ever take into consideration. Im old and retired now, but besides the drinking (to deal with the PTS) and long hours away and at home base training, and long hours working on my track... I lost my first two marriages each at seven years. Just the way it was. It was tough, but I treated each sorta like an op. Ok, what's the warning order? Mission data, worst case scenarios, etc... push through it. And, always on the offense. How I live my life now, except being retired and maturing, finally around 40 years old. Thanks again, BIG Dawg.

From what I’ve heard going sf in the national guard is the best of both worlds.

These guys shouldn’t have families while active. I do believe that any pros that come along with being a family man are destroyed by the reality of the job.
