Windows 8 Developer Preview - Overview

This is my first time checking out the new Windows 8 Developer Preview from Microsoft.

also notice the close window, minimize and maximize buttons are more squarey. That's a nice change. To those who think that this is not a full new OS, this is a very early build and will have lots more features and changes added before release. Anyway, M$ pulled off windows 98 as a whole new OS over 95. Also, there will almost definitely be some way to not use the Windows Phone-Metro-UI-Start-thingy, and to just use the regular windows start menu instead. Currently, that can be done by changing

It's not done I know. However.. the question is if im not going to use touch, dont like the top-menu on the explorer windows and don't run VMs. They are probaby(hopefully) going to add a "classic"-mode for the start menu in a near future. So why would I want to upgrade? Slight performance increase? thats what buggs me really... Liked the rework of the taskmanager tho, but it's not worth upgrading for.

im gonna install this preview to try out for myself in vmware but the new os looks crappy, they got rid of the start menu for some screen?

@AdzProductions So what you are saying, is that Win 8 at this stage is more or less "useless"? I mean, I don't play games on my computer, so my usage of a PC is more or less internet browsing, DL'ing, YouTube etc.. Would Win 8 at this stage be OK to use for this, or should I just stick with Win 7 and wait for a beta or RC?

I'm an XNA and C# programmer and it sucks that you can't make XNA Metro apps.

Any idea what dragging your mouse from the left side of your screen does?

@misternumberuno a simple registry key, but I expect M$ to put a real Control Panel option in the final release. This would mean basically windows 7, except new and improved performance, the cool microsoft-office-like windows explorer, the neat squarey version of Aero and who knows what else. Don't hate on it in its current form. Wait until it comes out. Then hate on it.

@Jshulman1995 Yeah I know Mac OS X v10.7 "Lion" Didn't have this feature called Launchpad which is basically the same things you see used for the iPod Touch, iPhone, and iPad.

@12345Edim It's hardware accelerated, so on top of all the pretty stuff, it is a faster version of windows 7.

@TheSimzen relax, watch till the end of the video, you'll actually see the desktop. The thing you see at the beginning of the screen is just the start menu.

@toiletbrush169 this is just the touch UI wich can be used with the mouse to but its fail I know, you can disable it and then it will look like Windows 7 but with more options.

the start menu uses the gpu not the cpu

@Zaro7 Uuuuh...did you watch the entire vid? that menu in the beginning is only optional, the real "explorer" looks just like W7 almost <.<
