"...I had an experience, I can't prove it, I can't even explain it.
But everything that I know as a human being, every thing I am, tells me that it was real.
I was given something wonderful, something that changed me forever.
A vision of the universe that tells us undeniable how tiny and insignificant and how rare
and precious we all are.
A vision that tells us that we belong to something that is greater than ourselves.
That we are not, that none of us are alone.
I wish I could share that. I wish that everyone, if even for one moment, could feel that awe & humility,
and the hope but...that continues to be my wish"

thank you Carl

She should have won an Oscar for that monologue alone.

Contact is unequivocally one of the smartest sci-fi I have ever seen, the balance of that genre with philosophy is incredible and Jodie is as always Fantastic, she deserved an Oscar nomination for this performance

Jodie Foster should have been given an Oscar for her brilliant performance in the Oscar. I think Academy might consider given her a life time acheivment due to her significant contribution in the motion pictures. She acted superbly in Silence of Lambs too along side Anthony Hopkins ✨🌠

These are the exact thoughts and sentiments of an objective person trying to explain, through logic and reason, their experience of a higher intervention, a God send if you will. You can shake that person down to their core, try to use anything and everything to dissuade them or prove to them wrong, but none of it will ever change their experience. It happened. And they themselves will never be able to deny it. There is nothing more real, more profound, or more humbling in life. This is an extremely powerful scene.

Based on how this country has handled a global pandemic this year....I wouldn't be surprised to know that an advanced civilization would say "they are not ready for this knowledge yet"

For some reason, the point which hits me hardest is when she says "how rare and precious" we all are.

Something greater than ourselves. A thing humanity seems to have lost.

Her monologue is so powerful to me. I have personally experienced something incredible that I can't prove or explain clearly but was more real than anything else I've ever experienced. It was beautiful and terrifying beyond words.

Beautiful film, I watched it yesterday for the first time in 10 years or more and forgot how much I loved it, an inspiring watch in these difficult times.

What frustrates me while watching this scene was they omitted the information during the inquiry that the recorder had 18 hours in it which corroborates the testimony of Elle. All static but still its evidence! They were in a very controlled environment so they can easily test if that was tampered.

i love the end bit, where they close the case, and he says "nobody can explain the 18hours of static recorded on her microphone"

And this is why Carl Sagan had 5 people go in the second pod in the novel. There's no way on Earth that our Government would allow only one person to go for this very reason. Having multiple witnesses to back the same story is super important.

I'm watching this clip in 2019. It's still one of the best movies that I have seen.

I was given something wonderful, something that changed me forever... A vision... of the universe, that tells us, undeniably, how tiny, and insignificant and how... rare, and precious we all are! A vision that tells us that we belong to something that is greater then ourselves, that we are *not*, that none of us are alone! I wish... I... could share that...
