Global National: June 18, 2021 | Changing guidance on vaccine second dose leaves Canadians confused

Canadians who have received the Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine as their first dose are confused over what to get for their second, following the latest federal guidance. As Mike Le Couteur explains, public health officials are trying to clarify their changing advice, and are reminding people that any second dose is safer than none.

Crystal Goomansingh looks at the different guidelines across the world in places that have approved AstraZeneca’s shot for use.

The vaccination uptake is starting to plateau, but roughly a quarter of Canadians still don’t have their first shot. Eric Sorensen reports on the different incentives provinces are setting up to reach vaccine-hesitant people.

In Waterloo, Ont. the ultra-contagious Delta variant has triggered a spike of COVID-19 cases. As Jamie Maraucher explains, that’s putting the city at risk of returning to lockdown, as the rest of the province looks to lift restrictions.

The weight of the climate crisis is bearing down on the U.S. west, where an extreme heat wave is peaking during a megadrought. Summer hasn’t even started yet, and as Jackson Proskow explains, that’s raising fears about the wildfire season.

Plus, should Canada Day celebrations be cancelled? Robin Gill looks at the growing debate as the country faces scrutiny for its dark history and present failures when it comes to Indigenous people.

Yeah, it's the citizens that are confused.
The _government's_ confused, the media is complicit, the people are _angry_

If someone doesn't want to Celebrate Canada day that's their business. Who are they to tell me I can't?
It's like someone trying to cancel Christmas. Good luck!

I don't give a crap if the indigenous feel like it's insulting to celebrate Canada Day, that's their problem. I'm going to celebrate the great economic system and one of the greatest countries in the world that have benefited other countries and given opportunities to many other people. I'm not going to disrespect this great country based on indiscretions caused by a government and politicians that aren't even in power or even alive anymore. The indigenous just need to be quiet now.

It bothers me that there are so many healthcare workers delivering vaccinations without wearing protective gloves.

If trudeau, tam, naici and health Canada would get their crap together and come out with some proper and coinciding guidelines, that would be helpful. Right hand can't see what left hand is doing cuz they are too busy playing pocket pool.

What Canadians need to realize is that we were a Colony of the British empire, it was the British that brought in Residential Schools, apartheid and reservation. As Canadians we inherited the English system, as did South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and India. Yes it was wrong, and now we agree that it was wrong, but I do not feel the Canada of today should beheld responsible. Let’s celebrate Canada Day for the country we are today, lets add a minute of silence to the celebration to show our respects for the wrongs of our past.

Not your nationality that defines you, but you shall define your nationality, Canadians!!!

Independent MP Derek Sloan holds a news conference on Parliament Hill to raise concerns about the alleged censorship of doctors and scientists as well as medical information related to vaccines. The Ontario MP has been critical of lockdowns that have been in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and also sponsored a petition questioning the safety of COVID-19 vaccines. He is joined by Byram Bridle (associate professor of viral immunology, University of Guelph), Dr. Patrick Phillips (family and emergency medicine physician in Ontario), and Don Welsh (professor of physiology and pharmacology, Western University).
