THE ROOT CAUSES Of Acne & How To Prevent It | Mark Hyman

Acne is the number-one skin condition in the United States, affecting not just millions of teenagers but an increasing number of adults under the guise of hormones. Typically, the first thing we reach for to deal with acne is a lotion, potion, or cream to apply to the skin—and conventional medicine doctors frequently prescribe birth-control pills. However, these approaches do not target the root cause of acne.

In this episode of my Masterclass series, I am interviewed by my good friend and podcast host, Dhru Purohit, about the biggest triggers of acne, why we all react differently, and the top nutrients for skin health. We also discuss some frequently asked questions from our community about acne during puberty and more.

Dhru Purohit is a podcast host, serial entrepreneur, and investor in the health and wellness industry. His podcast, The Dhru Purohit Podcast, is a top 50 global health podcast with over 30 million unique downloads. His interviews focus on the inner workings of the brain and the body and feature the brightest minds in wellness, medicine, and mindset.

This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, Athletic Greens, and Vuori.

Having severe cystic acne is so deflating to one’s self esteem…it leads to anxiety and depression, especially as a mature adult. I have such deep compassion for those who suffer from this.

A friends teen boy that had a horrible time with acne. He was on all these meds and getting skin treatments. Without much success I told her it could be his diet. To stop the junk food and sugar. He finally did and within a few weeks his skin was fine again. He wasn’t happy about giving up the junk food and started eating it again. But his skin broke out again. So he stopped for good and has great skin.

I did almost everything wrong for my daughter, ate lots of sugar while I was pregnant, because my Lamaze nurse said all we needed was the extra calories in an extra piece of cake – but anyway I had a horrible diet anyway and I think that set up my daughters preferences for an almost all carb diet as well. the one saving grace was that I did nurse her for 2 1/2 years. And that may be why she lucked out with a perfect creamy complexion, never one earache, no need for any antibiotics at all her whole childhood, no need for glasses are braces, no weight issues, etc. So I would say nursing is pretty important.

100% agree
Couple years ago I was suffering from severe food intolerance, I could no longer consume things like milk ... severe bloating, widespread body fungal infections, eczema, psoriasis, body acne, even pre diabetes ..
I mustered up the strength to go full 8 months absolute zero sugar, zero carbs without fail not once during those months. Not even a little snack.
I was taking a wide range of probiotics and natural supplements to assist in the process.
I reversed everything on that list.

The state of our skin microbiome/barriers are also really key to keeping acne at bay. Great info overall though!

Eating liver occasionaly and taking zinc/magnesium supplements really helped me with my acne that was more of version in which my whole face had clogged up pores and deep under skin pimples. Also collagen supplements or3 bone broth is good for clean skin.

I find strep is an issue with acne, so sipping water that has cayenne pepper in it, making sure it hits the back of the throat can be very effective

I eat very healthy, high quality foods. (Half plate veggies, 1/4 complex carbs), 1/4 protein) and I make sure to add healthy fats. I barely ever have dairy, sugar. I get good sleep, drink lots of water.

I exercise regularly, I am very joyful, not aware of any stress.

Whyyyy have I been breaking out on my chin/cheeks for a year??

I don’t seem to have gut issues with bowel movements etc.

My skincare is “top notch” according to derms, I even change my pillowcase EVERY DAY!

I live a low-tox lifestyle. It makes no sense

I wish I had known abut sugar being bad for you when I was a young adult, I had acne from age 19 until 40 . Now at almost 80 I have no spots, on Keto best skin ever.👍💖🇬🇧 all I ever eat was sweet things, along with fruit. No dinners. I was always told, it was nothing to do with what I eat.

I've been intermittent fasting along with some 3-day and a 4-day fasts during the last six months and in the process I've *_healed a severe histamine intolerance._* And I still have rosacea. I obviously healed my gut permeability and flora diversity and disbiosis if my severe asthmatic histamine response is TOTALLY RESOLVED. So what is going on with my skin that it isn't responding to what I did to heal my gut?
