IVF - Why Eggs Don't Fertilize

Sometimes during IVF, the eggs don't fertilize.. Why does this happen? Find out in this episode of InfertilityTV with IVF Expert, Dr Randy Morris.
We can divide fertilization failure into three categories. 1) Problems with the sperm 2) Problems with the egg and 3) A combination of problems.

#IVF #ICSI #FertilizationFailure

So there are three major barriers that sperm must get past in order to release their contents into the egg. There are abnormalities that can occur in sperm that can cause one or more of these steps to fail.

Fortunately, we have a technology called ICSI that can bypass these problems. ICSI involves injected a sperm directly inside the egg. As a result, ICSI is an excellent technique for bypassing any problem which makes it harder for a sperm to get inside the egg

Even if a sperm is injected into an egg using ICSI, problems within the egg may still prevent the process of fertilization from being completed.

Unfortunately, we do not have accurate testing which can identify which sperm or eggs may have abnormalities that will prevent fertilization. Using ICSI, we can bypass most if not all of the SPERM problems but not the EGG problems.

There are no known technologies that can fix these sperm or egg problems. Unless technology changes dramatically, attempts at fertilization are never going to be perfect.

I’m confuse on so many levels about incompatible sperm and egg. And I think that is true because I know a lady who she and her husband have been together for 12 years before they separated they was trying to conceive a baby but it did not work as soon as her husband and her broke up he got another woman pregnant and she got pregnant with triplets

Why, during the same cycle, 8 naturally fertilized eggs(IVF) produce only a blastocyst of average quality and 5 eggs fertizied by ICSI produce 3 blastocysts of good and average quality? How could we explain this? Thx

My day 1 report came back with 0 eggs fertilized out of 5 mature eggs and the lab is "monitoring" the eggs. Does fertilization have to happen on day 1? Or can it happen by day 2?

For ICSI, how is each sperm selected for each egg? Married 3+ years, tried 12 IVF rounds, no children.

Hello Doctor, thank you very much for this informative video. I went through IVF procedure but on egg retrieval embryologist found my eggs were immature and had very thick zone pellucida. Doctor I am 38 years with AMH count 3.6. What could be the reasons. DO I have any problem or the procedure was not performed well? Kindly suggest. Thanking you in advance.

Hi Dr Randy thank you for the video it helps a lot. i have a question and i hope to receive your answer. Could you please explain to me what does it mean the ´´egg not fertilized´´ does it mean it doesn´t make an embryo or both are different things? actually am in the journy of IVF procedure for the 3rd time. and they collect from my only right side 2eggs. yesterday they called me to tell me that there will not be embryo transfer bcs the egg is not fertilized. in my 2nd round i had 3eggs and the procedure faild. but they kept them and they will reuse them So they told me they used 4 out of 5eggs. but nothing to work. i turned 39 on january so is that mean i will not be a mom bcs i dont have enough eggs???

My husband has slightly high prolactin but he had a sperm count and it looked normal. Does high prolactin in men affects fertilization?

Hi dr. We had 18 mature eggs and 11 fertilized thru icsi. This number seems low to me. Is there a correlation between lower fertilization rate and changes of the embryos making it to cystoblasts? And/ or testing genetically normal after day 6? Please and thanks
