Fav math rock riff of all time. First heard it whilst I was watching fireworks on 4th of July on a Sony Walkman my friend gave to me

As someone who went to high school in the early 2000s and plays guitar and drums, I absolutely love your channel. It's also crazy how much music I missed from that time.

I recently picked up guitar again after a decade-long break with the intention to learn some Midwest Emo and math rock. This has been the first song I’ve been learning and it’s been so much fun to discover some new techniques and the sounds of FACGCE. The timing of this video has encouraged me to practice more today. Thanks for everything you do Steve! Your channel is what I wish I had when I first picked up guitar and I’m so thankful to have these resources now that I’m playing again.

The song that made me fall in love with the genre.

I saw americ anfootball live for the first time last month and sobbed my eyes out.

Thanks for this mate! I'm finding so many songs I thought I'd never be able to play are actually not that hard, wish I'd not let Guitar Hero 3 fool me into thinking Guitar was hard back in 2007

I’m a bit over a year into playing guitar and one of the songs that first inspired me to take the leap and actually play guitar was the song Pallet Town by Free Throw. I spent a good hour on it a couple weeks ago and realised “huh, this actually isn’t as hard as I thought!” It’s still hard for sure but I reckon that if you’ve got a bit of knowledge behind you, and have time to practice it would be a great song to learn! :)

Also it’s in D A E A C# E

Best of luck to everyone and keep practicing!!! <3

this was the first math rock riff i learned and it taught me a lot when i first starting these types of techniques. this riff is just a good and basic riff to learn in general to help you learn so much!

If you're more of an advanced or even intermediate player, Always Focused by Tiny Moving Parts gets my vote. That was my gateway riff. The whole Pleasant Living album is a top 3 album for me and is a great album to listen to for those getting into math rock/midwest emo too (DAEAC#E, capo on 4)

Wow this takes me back to early 2000s! I’ve wanted to learn this riff forever! Thank you for the breakdown, the drum beat always feels so good to jam along with this too! HNY 🎉

Be honest Steve. This was just an excuse to play Never Meant for us again wasn't it?

Midwest Pen Pals with songs such as Movies like Juno is a good second step in the math rock/midwest emo journey

Awesome! Would you be able to make a video explaining how you chose specific chords? Instead of just doing basic power chords. Thanks!
