Ultrawide Monitors...

Should you buy an Ultrawide monitor for gaming? There are a lot pros and cons to gaming in 21:9. Many games have ultrawide support... but many have partial/none or rely on ultrawide mods. There are cost issues as well. So is going ultrawide worth it? What are the alternatives to ultrawide?

*the FUNNIEST monitor comment I ever heard was...*
A few years ago there was a discussion forum about the pros and cons of Ultrawides. At one point a guy said (and he was not joking) that he did tasks that worked better on Ultrawides, but he ALSO did tasks that benefited more from height... at which point he said he wished someone would design a monitor that was BOTH wider AND taller.

ultrawide is the best experience ive ever had, especially a curved one. only problem ever has been to get some older games to running and thats it, was well worth it.

Although this is not a standard... The oddesey neo g9 has decent local dimming so no glowing black bars.

I haven't had any issues whatsoever with my 34" 1440p ultrawide so far. Though, I mainly play racing and flight sims and some strategy games. In all of those it's a dream. So, from my perspective there's no going back to 16:9.

I've couldn't have made a better choice. Using my 48" LG C1 O-LED as my gaming monitor and my 34"Ultrawide LG34 GK950G as my secondary screen I absolutely love this setup and the LG C1 is the best gaming experience I've ever had and would not trade it for any Ultrawide. Your content is awesome buddy, well done...

I like playing single player immersive games. I got an ultrawide LG screen and I love it. I have a 6900xt gpu though so it can pretty much run anything at ultrawide resolution on max settings.

I agree, ultrawide monitors have quirks. It honestly sucks because I thought the industry was moving to wider displays especially after seeing super ultrawide monitors, but that never happened. I remember when everything was 4:3 and then 16:9 came around. Lots of games didn't properly support widescreen, and it was the same issue we have today. I didn't even upgrade to a widescreen LCD until the physical number of pixels was the same (1920x1200) as what I used on my CRT (1600x1200).

You can turn any monitor or TV to an ultrawide with custom resolutions. I'm also using a 49 inches 4k TV as a monitor and setting Ultrawide ratio for gaming mostly to get more fps in games.

I went from a 3440 x 1440 ultrawide, to a standard 27" 1440p display, which I like better for triple A titles. Now I'm about to try a 32 in 1440p display because you get 2 inches less in width than a ultra wide but you get more height, while still maintaining a 16x9 ratio

I have a Samsung G9 32:9 for 8 months now & I love it I had the best gaming experience ever especially on 240Hz also it's not just for gaming I use it for productivity 3D CGI stuff while working on 240Hz refresh rate with this massive extra space is something else what a breeze, But again everything has it's pros & cons & everybody is different but for me I found what I wanted from this monitor and that's what matters.

Hey Daniel, I'm an English teacher in Turkey and your stuff just cracks me up at times. They are so relatable, such is the life of teachers.

I've had my ultrawide for nearly a year now and despite the issues that come with it I love it, I highly doubt i will ever go back to 16:9

I bought my 34" ultrawide back in 2017, no plans to go back anytime soon, that extra width has been more useful than a detriment for me. The interesting thing I've noticed is that new shows (particularly sci fi) have started embracing the use of wider formats than 16:9, anywhere from 18:9 to 21:9.

Problems with the OLED method however.
- Burn in ( Each pixel has a life expectancy you can't get around that. The middle pixels being used more will give burn in or color shift. )
- Desk space
- curvature ( Ultrawide monitor Curve helps ALOT with distortions and immersion)
- less quips as a native resolution won't have as many problems. ( for example halo infinite can't run fullscreen so for this to work on tv you would need to change desktop monitor resolution everytime as well.)
-refresh rate ( tv will go to 120hz but many ultrawides will go above that like 144hz or even 200hz like my monitor )

I had a super ultrawide (CRG9) for years. Just recently went to a 32 inch 4k monitor and 28 inch 4k side panel and its overall a better experience

I really enjoy UWQHD, even if you can't use it for that with all mediums.
That said, for work and productivity with long timelines (music, certain video editing), etc it's just second to none.
AKG K702's, noize.

You should throw in an Super ultrawide in that mix. 32:9. Almost 4k

Msi MAG301RF has extremely good response time and it’s the best ultrawide I’ve used. Blacks are ok and colours are good with a little saturation boost. It’s 2560x1080p 200hz. Great price too!

The big downside is having to have a beefy GPU to run on a ultrawide. It's basically you making the commitment to buy the best GPU every launch.
