ZBRUSH 2019 - REACTION AND RANT

So for starters, Pixologic has finally released a couple of features that are updates and in the new version of ZBrush 2019, we would take a look at them today and see if they are worthy of the title updates or if they should be tagged as features.

This was an update geared towards Concept artists/illustrators and Visdev. Since Zbrush is used more and more in Films and entertainment, Pixologic is making more of an effort to appeal to those kinds of industries, not just for Production. In Production, there is no competition, you HAVE to use Zbrush in your pipeline. But its not true for the Concept/Visdev side. This will make more artists get into Zbrush that wasn't interested before. This was a smart move for Pixologic.

Anyone else think they should overhall the Zmodeller tool to make it be able to handle larger scenes - so one could produce things closer to the stuff you can do in 3ds Max? I personally would love to scrap all the other modelling softwares (Max and Maya) and just use Zbrush in a pipeline with Houdini and UE4, for example..

I actually understand why they did all those things and didn't do UVs and Zmodeler, for example. Conventional 3D modeling and UV starting to be too slow and resource intensive. With level of detail 3D has now, you don't have time and resources to UV everything and why model with Zmodeler, when you can just bam-bam thing and Zremesh it on the fly? Also, there are more and more people who illlustrate in Zbrush. And demand is growing, so they added that comic style thing =). 3D snapshot is the answer to one of 3Dcoat's best features. I mean, everything they did is right, considering market and all.

I think that this is an interesting take away from the features that they have added, personally I see what they've done here as opening the viability of Zbrush to a wider market while continuing to have a hardcore following. I am afraid though that they will switch to subscription only in the future. But for students that need to learn Zbrush this is a great intro point, a 6 month license would work very well for students who can't afford a student priced version or a full version of Zbrush.

Its still called Spotlight they just added Snapshot 3d functions to it.

I feel that a big problem is how ZBrush fits into pipeline. I would like a new manual Retopo tool inside Zbrush. Something simple like TopoGun. Then I would like to properly unwrap the lowpoly inside of Zbrush. I always have to leave to Retopo and unwrap properly. Doing it inside ZB is possible yes-but needs to be streamlined for PBR workflow. Folders and cameras are great.
My biggest concern is the wording of the new Licensing. All 2018 will be converted to a perpetual 2019 for free. However it says that the 2019 perpetual license is good for only ONE year of updates. Sounds like this will be the end of ZBrush free upgrades lifespan.

It's weird that considering the perpetual license has only one update guarantee the cheapest license is the 179.99 one for 6 months. Very strange price structure if you ask me. (Yes the perpetual license so far has always gotten a free upgrade but they have never guaranteed that it will remain so)

Exactly, folders and the realistic camera should of been added ages ago, the latest project I have finished really needed a realistic camera and now it may be too late to go back to it.

Why can't we have a simple clone instance object. It would make my life so much easier and I wouldn't have to go to 3d coat to only do that simple thing! :(

This is what I would like to see implemented/improved : UV, Paint, PBR, quad views like 3D apps, a cloth sim tool like in 3D coat. they lost their focus I guess.

I feel its funny that nobody in their videos actually mentions that the perpetual license this time only updates for a year and then you basicly need to buy another perpetual or monthly license XD or keep running on the old license without updates ofcorse

zmodeler is a fast way to create semi complex models . it`s not dead but not perfect either . you can combine zmodeler with live boolean and new alpha modeling to create complex shapes, and finally with zremesher 3 : a complex model with decent topology for any projects

I would have to agree with some of your rants. Personally I don't see this as a 2019 features but more like a 2018.3+ update.
But I'm still thankful to Pixologic for actually updating it regardless of how confused/questioned we are with some of their decisions for this update.
IT'S STILL FREE for existing users! Anything for free is better than nothing at all so I am truely grateful to them.
Definitely some cool necessary and long overdue updates especially folder, camera and new zremesher.
And yes there a ton of the existing feature needs some rework. Unit scale, pbr rendering, posing, etc. Anything over a toon shader renderer.
There are several other programs that can achieve this style already. Who knows I may use some of those other new features in the future once I get a chance to play around with them.

I wanted to see uv stuff and per pixel painting too. Better rendering like Keysoe in zbrush, cut out the middle applications, charge more if its worth it. Subscription is a nice touch for short term users only, most people will use zbrush forever that use it purposely.
