Thank you so much for providing great quality stuff about 3D. I've been studying 3D modeling for about 1.5 years now and I've been watching you're videos for almost a year. I've learned so much from you and I can't thank you enough for doing what you do. It's like you guys are my own mentors. I appreciate everything you do.

Remember, what they’re saying about Zbrush is that it makes A LOT of these things easier. You basically get a program worth the money you pay.

It’s not to say you CANT do this stuff in different ways in other programs, it’s just Zbrush is able to do a lot of the stuff A LOT easier.

I wish I could use Zbrush, but I can’t currently justify the cost, but I’ve learned that it’s not about the program, it’s about the artist. You may get MORE tools to use and cool tools to use, but you’re limited by your knowledge and artistic eye. I’ve learned that although it’s a little clunky, I can get some great results in Blender(though I agree, it’s not optimized for CRAZY detail, but you can do similar with normal maps and can even still bake high resolution). It’s definitely more clunky and not as easy as Zbrush, but just for you newbs out there, you don’t HAVE to shy away from sculpting because you can’t afford Zbrush yet.

With that being said, no matter what software, you could make some awesome art if you know where and how the tools are used. You could have an AMAZING artist and an inexperienced artist, and the inexperienced artist will always struggle, no matter HOW many tools you give them.

I hope you guys understand what I mean :)

Yep... ZBrush user here since 2006... without ZB, I'd be still box modelling in Softimsge... I even use ZB for hard surface design.

I'm psyched for ZB 2020

I wish zrush had blenders sculpting layout with the tools and hotkeys but then keep the feel of zbrush

Years ago I was moving and did a u turn in some corporate parking lot. It was like 8 at night I think. As I was turning, my headlights shined on a building and I noticed it was still occupied. I put 2 and 2 together and think it was some kind of engineering or architecture company with a bunch of 3d designers. Apparently they had a tight deadline lol.

Split-screen under Transform has helped me with my anatomy. Load anatomically correct model in and you can educate yourself on proportions and muscle masses.

I've used Mudbox for 10 years and have recently switched to Zbrush. It's like driving a Honda Civic for 10 years then switching to a Ferrari.

My immediate impression of ZBrush a couple of weeks ago was that it was and is yet another program that has too much legacy baggage in it, like Photoshop, for example. In peculiar similarity, both are often used for things they weren't originally designed for (from photo editing to digital painting in the latter, although this has somewhat dropped off in the advent of more available competition). This might be conspiracy theorist thinking, but a lot of these software packages have always felt like they were being "developed" by a group of senior staffers, collecting their fat checks, that just don't want to change anything at all, let alone listen to anyone daring to have to relearn everything just for their programs.

There's a malicious sort of "encoding" that happens when you learn software. The user is forced to learn how the devs want them to interact with their software, and the more buried the menus are, the more vague the UI is, the more encoding is done on the user to have to stick with that piece of software for a lengthy period of time, otherwise be damned to forgetting all the unnecessary complication, crypticness, or laziness. So, we all get locked into them and their production/profit cycles.

I sincerely hope that Blender's sculpting can become as performant as ZBrush's. It's one the major areas of art creation that could seriously bridge that "industry standard" gap. I found it to be really enjoyable to sculpt in Blender, but my machine started to chug fairly early on into sculpts. I jumped to ZBrush, got over its annoying quirks, and am creating fairly decent things with a lot of headroom left for high res detailing. If blender could do tens of millions of "polygons", I wouldn't even be considering ZBrush.

zbrush feels like a 3d program that was made by someone who's never used a 3d program before... totally re-invented the wheel without any consideration of what came before. the fact that it started off as a "2.5d" program still haunts the program today even though in terms of industry usage, NOBODY cares about the 2.5d stuff.

my personal wish list for zb would be:

- ability to hide menu items. there are SO MANY LEGACY TOOLS that is, AT BEST, ESOTERIC! it was esoteric for sure when it was introduced, it's probably far into CRYPTIC now.
- different tabs for different workflows. zbrush does so many things now and they're all crammed into the same workspace that makes it confusing as hell. zmodeler should be a different tab. that thing where you create by masking the profiles - that should be a separate tab. polypainting should be a separate tab. 2.5d should be a separate tab! and you can flip tabs to your hearts content with no lag... it just organizes the tools (and brushes) so that you're not looking at EVERYTHING at once all the time.
- option to make dropping the tool impossible. it still happens. it still bugs the shit out of me.
- spend less time adding and spend more time SUBTRACTING legacy features or at least obscuring them so they don't clutter up the interface. many tools need to be deprecated.

so much that's good. so much insanity tho.

the worst thing about that for me is that i DON'T get to spend all my time in front of zb. i wish i could. but i can't. that means that because of how alien zb's interface is, everytime i drop back in to do a quick fix or detail up or something, my brain has to spend the first few minutes recovering from GUI related PTSD.

Well, you told me what it is. But I'm looking for something more....personal?
**settles on the couch**
So let's get to the real question here, no point beating around the bush. Be honest with me.
What do you FEEL about Zbrush?

Try "sculpting" in Fusion 360's form workspace. That is an adventure.

Hello, you can customize UI in zbrush to what you want. While default UI is confusing, it’s currently the only app that you can customize all UI combination you can think of. All zbrush expert did it .. make the software yours 🤗🤗
