If you're travelling to the west, Amtrak is the best. Just allow a full day for travel and typically you're there the next day, well rested cuz the seats are super comfy.

The rail pass is a great buy! BUT....the cost and problems with finding a place to sleep when you get off, on the various legs, is both expensive AND, sometimes, problematic.
