In this video we explore a few setup options that you can try as a left handed drummer, these ones I have found to be the most practical for my students and in live working environments but no one setup will work for all so It's really good to experiment to find the setup that works best for you.

Thanks for taking the time to lay this out so carefully. Really appreciate it, as a left handed just starting. 😊

Lars, this is a very informative video. I am not left-handed, nor do I play the drums, but many times through the years when I've seen Ringo Starr (a left-handed drummer) interviewed and him explaining how he plays a right-handed setup since that is what he learned on, and how that affects his playing. As a non-drummer, it has always been difficult for me to understand his explanation but your video showing the different setups made it easier to understand. Thanks.😀

Thanks man!
I've been plaing drums for few years and just looking around to find some video that said -it's okey to put china above hi hat and both crushes on left side (i play 3. Variation- fully left!)

Now i think no one will tell me that my symbals are standind totaly wrong! 🤘

Very informative. I'm a right-handed drummer. Every once in a while, I attempt to practice open-handed just to keep my left in shape.

Bought an Alesis Nitro for my 9 year old, and like a plonker set it up for myself being a right hander, I simply thought he’d be fine by not crossing his hands over to play the high hat & snare, and I forgot about his left foot! I loved the setup for myself but now have to re-jig it for his natural playing style. Bloomin lefties!

I’m learning open handed, and think it’s great for me because I’m ambidextrous (slight left hand preference)

I am a left handed drummer. When playing shared gear, I just move the snare and hihat and move the floor tom a little bit back so I can use the floor tom in the side snare location.

As an open hander, I follow the Dennis Wilson mantra of using the left hand on the hats because it was the closest stick. Of course, Dennis Wilson never took a drum lesson in his life and he was better off for that.

Cool! Thanks for this :)

I don't own a proper drum kit but still I will keep this in mind incase I get one...

The other option that you didn't mention was to use a remote (cable) hi-hat pedal, which then allows you to use your right foot to activate the hi-hat and your left foot to be able to play the bass drum.... which is my preferred option...

Why would, nay should, a left-hander compromise on an instrument that is 100% reversible/reconfigurable? We lefties put up with enough shit in a right-handed world as it is.

I'm a queer one, I fire shotgun or rifle from left shoulder, write, paint, use woodwork tools with right hand, draw with either a lefty drummer. I started on a regular kit, but used your easy rider type set up. BUT recently (for a laugh)😆 went "full lefty" option 4, and started learning left footed bass drum., And I do like the abidextrousness, satillopen handed. Slightly odd at first, but it was a case of consciously making the left foot more active. PLUS when I swapped back, the hi hat was giving me way more possibilities (speed and power)

I’m left handed but right-“handed” on my foot so I prefer the 2nd option, open hand always

Could I not put my high hat to my right. And my floor tom tom to my left ?
