Someone: How does Latin America work?
Me (a Latin American): that's the neat thing, it doesn't.

I majored in Latin American studies and Spanish Language.

It was such an amazing education on the culture, politics, and economies of Spanish-speaking countries of the Western Hemisphere.

Brazil progressed when we had an emperor who controlled the landlords, after the landlords got rid of the emperor the nation began to collapse.

Oh boy, that blanket statement of "not enough war to advance" kind of gets my anger up, but I'm just too tired to argue this pet peeve of mine.

25:08 's point is incomplete though. They DID raise a hand, but lowered it once Mexico offered compensation.

Thanks so much for making this video. You are right. We need to change the way we think in order for our countries to move forward. Stop envying the rich and looking down on the poor.

Thank You! Just subscribed. I've been trying to explain stuff like this to my German roomies for a couple of years now...
In Paraguay we call it being "Gua'i", kinda being weird in the way you do things or doing them unintuitively. Turns out we're stuck in an outdated social hierarchy! At least in Paraguay we've evolved past Racism and we're plain old discriminatory against systemically opressed paupers and an overexploited working class XD. Corrupt rich dudes of every colour own every f*ing inch

I was with you on a lot of this until you started on colonialism. You said it was all consensual. What’s consensual about the us military sending the us military to break up strikes.?

In Argentina we have a phrase:

"If you leave the country for 10 days and come back everything has changed, if you leave for 10 years and come back nothing has changed"

The common saying is that emigrating from one country to another within Latin America is like changing cabins on the Titanic.

Here in Brazil we have a saying that's more or less like this:

"Here in Brazil you can die of anything, except boredom"

*Latin America: Don't have much wars. So, powers don't compete and develop.*
*Cartels: and I took that personally*

"Canadians and Americans often look upon it with a combination of horror and condescension."

That's our reaction to everything that isn't ourselves. And sometimes parts of ourselves too.
