Brief History of US-Latin American Relations

There has always been a power differential between the United States and Latin America and thus, the relationship has always revolved around the interests of the US and Latin America's reaction to that. Nonetheless, while American intervention caused a lot problems in the region, the American footprint was far more evident in Central America and the Caribbean than South America and was not always negative. This video looks at the various ways in which the relationship has changed from 1787 to 2021.

I often remind people (because of the concepts of Latin America and Central America) not to forget that Mexico is just as much a part of North America as the US and Canada.

I like how you called out the easy narrative of:
"Everything terrible that has happened in latin america is the us' fault".
This nuanced take on the complex relationship latin america has with the us got you a sub

I like how you explore the details of US-Latin relations while not excusing America's genuinely bad policies like the 1973 Chile coup and the drug war.

Thank you for touching the walker subject over Nicaragua. To this day Nicaraguans still suffer cause of walkers Intervention. Paving the way for the US to support the Somoza dictatorships and bringing a never ending instability to the country still felt to this day. even tho in a way it seems crazy to think Nicaragua could had easily been a US state along with it guanacaste in Costa Rica

Not American, but gringos or Unitedstatesian, United State of North America (Mexico and Canada also belong to North America)! Americans are all of us who were born on the American Continent.

Then immigration is always an ISSUE for Americans, then you wonder why it is a problem that is indeed tied to their own way of system and policies

Awesome video! Could you do a video on Latin immigration & assimilation in the US? Not just in the southwest but places like the PNW or Midwest?

This was very fair in a way I wasn't expecting. Typically, when watching these videos, I brace myself to hear an American blame corrupt Latin American governments for problems. Great job not doing that, but still discussing the problems in Latin America and how US intervention has worsened or bettered these problems.

Around 8:39, you said "Guam and the Philipines remain American territories to this day."
That's only have correct, Guam is an American Territory, but the Philipines is not. They actually won independents back in the 1940's.

Pretty interesting! Fact is Wars with France and Spain in the 1800s had greater impact than conflict with the USA. Do some study on that. Furthermore California Territory which was governored separately from Mexico concluded that annexation by the French, British, Russians, or Americans was in their best interest. This was 10 years after Mexican Independence. They wanted out with Mexico.

Long live the Spanish conquistadors descendants. We are still here and we love the USA. The Spanish missions of California.

its hilarious how you say the bad americans tried to influence politics and get rid of USSR commies... without asking first, how did the USSR get so many communists in the first place? The USSR invaded south america first, and south america hurts to this day because of their actions. Look at Ukraine today, and tell me the USSR did good for them.
