What Is a Hernia and How Is One Repaired?

Think of a hernia like a bulge in a damaged tire. The inner tube or soft tissue is normally contained by the abdominal wall, and if there is a leak or weak spot the soft tissue like fat or intestines can protrude through. Having a hernia will eventually require surgery to repair, and there are several different ways surgeons go about it.

For everyone wondering about whether or not they have a hernia, chances are, if you think you might have one, then you more than likely have. I manually lift/move around HGV tyres in my job...yet noticed my hernia occurred when I was blowing my nose! Very strange sensation like a "pop" in the side of groin area. Not really painful, but strange. I was aware of hernias, as my Dad had one before. I checked, by looking down at the pubic area. One side was more pronounced than the other. Obviously sizes can increase over time, but it wasn't a pain or hassle for me at all. Yes it ached at times, but mostly hurt/(strange "pop" feeling) only when I sneezed! I've just had open surgery 4 days ago. Local anaesthetic. Not going to lie, it wasn't the nicest, but nothing to worry about. You can feel pulling, tugging, and it is quite painful when the anaesthetic wears off, but I can walk slowly now. I'm trying not to move fast, as you can certainly feel it if you do!

Thanks for the info. My father had a hernia operated on in the 1990's, using Johnson and Johnson mesh if I'm not mistaken. His incision wound never healed, and to the day he died (almost 30 years later) a 4" x 4" bandage was needed to cover the open weeping wound - changed every two days. I do believe they have corrected the mesh issues subsequently, but none of his doctors ever suggested corrective surgery to replace the mesh to the best of my knowledge. Hopefully this doesn't happen any longer.

I wonder how people in the old days who didn’t have surgery cope with this and war 😢. Our ancestors were tough

Intestinal hernias are almost unheard of and usually result from some sort of blunt trauma. Think of it, if digested food passes through the intestine either the hernia would greatly bulge or it would pinch off the passage and cause a medical emergency. 99% of hernias are the result of the abdominal fat protruding through the abdominal muscle. A lot of the time you can actually push it back in with your finger. The nonsurgical remedy is to do a prolonged water fast. As your body uses up the body fat for energy, the protruding fat will shrink and once small enough will get pulled back into the abdomen. Then you can strengthen the muscles by doing sit ups and the hole in the abdominal muscle will eventually close and repair. Prolonged fasts require supplementing with electrolytes (salt, potassium, magnesium, calcium) and vitamins (B vitamins, K, etc) and minerals (iron, copper, zinc, boron, etc). There was a morbidly obese man named Angus Barbieri who fasted for 382 days and felt just fine throughout the fast taking just supplements and caffeine.

2: laparoscopic surgery

I got a hernia from shoveling snow. I was out of commission for several months after my hernia surgery. Plus one of my nuts swelled up to the size of a tennis ball. I wasn't given any warning about this by the doctors and they gave me No meds for the swelling. Luckily Old Lefty is back to normal now. Think twice before agreeing to this type of surgery.

it felt like something gushing out from my stomach and I almost could move due to the pain, but after relaxing a little bit it went back in.

I had a very unsuccessful hernia surgery and now it just pokes out of my body standing or laying. It's at the very top.. too scared to have another one. There were 2 scars that be stayed open for, 5 years. They just now sealed. Hernia is still huge and yes they used mesh. I'm wondering if it moved.. miserable life! Take care of it as soon as you realize it's not going away..
