I read Northanger Abbey a few months ago and was really surprised how good it was, it's a very amusing read. I really hope you enjoy it as much as I did. I remember loving Moonstone when I read it many years ago (I think I'll reread this one soon). Such a great selection of books I think I'll add Middlemarch and the Age of Innocence to my TBR for next year

Northanger is my favourite Austen and I hope you adore it. Not only is it a glorious story (maybe leave until October/ Hallows) but it was also the first book that she wrote which is just delightful by itself!

Great list! Been meaning to get to Villette for a few years, i think its the last Bronte I have left! Also been wanting to read Middlemarch, I tried it a few years back but i just wasn't in the mood for it, maybe I'll give it another shot in March!

9 of these are on my tbr as well! I must highly recommend Ethan Frome by Edith Wharton as well. Sooo good to read in the winter. ❄️🛷 I’m going to have to read Master and Margarita 👌🏻 Happy Holidays!

If the short stories don’t work out for you, I actually recommend starting with 2 of Dostoevsky’s early novels, “Notes from Underground” and “The Double”. “Notes” will give you a good sense of his later works, as it’s more philosophical, and “The Double” has a lot of fantastical elements and is a particularly fun read when it comes to Dostoevsky. They’re both very short, sometimes you can even find them published together. In my view, they both inspired a lot of later works, and I’ve enjoyed trying to figure out what all they’ve influenced.

A few of these are also on my to read list for the coming year, such as Northanger Abbey, Villette, and North and South. I read Middlemarch in 2016 and loved it. I have also loved the Edith Wharton I've read in the past.

That's wonderful that you want to augment your book collection with more classics. In my humble opinion, wanting to read more classic literature is always a worthwhile and admirable endeavor :)

I love Middlemarch and have read three times in four years. 2017 was my year for Villette. It’s very different from Jane Eyre but is quite powerful and ultimately fascinating. I think both of those will be a treat for you. I’ll be reading Master and Margarita and North and South in 2018 as well. Wish me luck!

The Master and Margarita is my most favourite book in the world and I if you won´t like it it will break my heart! I really do hope you enjoy it. First half of it is utter madness. Then everything falls into place.

I also plan to read Villette, The Age Of Innocence, Northanger Abbey, and North and South this year! So weird, I'm also reading through the Brontë and Jane Austen works, too, and I read Persuasion in 2017. I love classics!

Hey, I'm reading Madame Bovary right now! I'm about halfway through and I've loved it so far, especially Flaubert's writing style, which is really a thing of beauty. I spent a portion of 2017 reading Dostoevsky's short stories too, so I'm hoping to finally read some of the novels this year. "White Nights" (which I think is in the collection you have) is my favorite, but "Bobok" and "A Gentle Creature" are also really interesting.

Again, I absolutely love this channel! Thank you for sharing books you read. Not only that, but you read books that most wouldn't consider. Quite the expansive taste :)

This is a great list. I want to read more of the classics too and I look forward to hearing you discuss these. Wharton is an inspiration - winning the Pulitzer in that time was quite the accomplishment.

Villette! Middlemarch! Two of my favorite books of all time! I hope you love them (especially Villette, which I think deserves more love). Good luck with all of these — I myself just got The Master and Margarita for Christmas, so I'm hoping to get to that one in 2018, too :)

I've read some of these (Villette, The Master and Margarita, The Moonstone, North and South, The Age of Innocence, Madame Bovary), and I would definitely recommend The Master and Margarita - it was mad and I loved it!

What a fantastic list!I have read and loved many of the books on it! I do think that Villette is more accomplished than Jane Eyre, but Jane Eyre has a very special place in my heart. North and South was one of my favorite books this year! I'm reading Wives and Daughters now and loving it even more (if that's humanly possible). I would love to read This Side of Paradise and Madame Bovary if you're looking for any buddy reads this year! :)

This is such a wonderful list! I hope you enjoy them. I've attempted Villette several times and haven't been able to push through. I would love to hear your thoughts on it. I particularly loved the Moonstone and Madam Bovary from this list. Happy reading :)

I'm always impressed at how articulate you are in your videos. I read both North and South and Northanger Abbey this year and enjoyed them both. North and South was one of my top reads of the year. If you're a fan of watching adaptations, I cannot recommend the North and South BBC adaptation enough, although I would recommend watching it after reading it. I watched it multiple times before reading the book and while for the most part it didn't ruin the reading experience, some of my favorite lines and moments from the miniseries were not in the book which was a bit of a letdown. I actually find the setting of the Industrial Revolution a plus as well, and found the parts about the workers and the formation of the unions interesting, and I'm saying that with Pride and Prejudice as my favorite book. Northanger Abbey was my last Austen novel. I don't think it is as strong as some of the others when it comes to characters and plot, but it shines as a parody of the gothic novels popular when Austen was writing, and if you keep that in mind while reading it is entertaining. You have some other great options on here, I'm hoping to get to The Master and Margarita and Villette this year.

I've read five of the books on your list and I loved all of them. North and South is an absolute delight, and you definitely need to watch the 2004 BBC miniseries when you've finished it. The ending is totally different, but both endings are WONDERFUL. Madame Bovary surprised me a LOT when I read it. I expected it to drag, but I was hooked basically from page 1. Villette I don't remember much about (except that I liked it), and it's on my list of things to reread next year. Northanger Abbey is great, but I think a lot of people struggle with it because it's SO satirical of gothic novels and if you haven't read many gothic novels (and are reading an edition that doesn't have notes to point out all the satire), it's hard to see in the 21st century. And I adore The Moonstone, although personally I prefer The Woman in White as far as Wilkie Collins books go.

Ooooh I second wanting to read Villette. I haven't read any Bronte other than Jane Eyre. I've yet to read any Gaskell, but am looking forward to in 2018. AND YES TO MIDDLEMARCH. If you're looking for a reading buddy for Middlemarch, I'm totally here.

Such a fun video!!
