I'm pregnant and been vegan for 5 years. I somewhat can imagine and roughly calculate in my mind how to get enough iron (30mg/day), but it really gets tricky for me to hit the 1000mg of calcium per day.

Have not eaten much dairy for decades. Dairy free 13 years- high plant based/vegan plant based at times. Whole foods plant based with some fish and poultry. Just diagnosed with osteoporosis at age 61

When I first went vegan, I craved yogurt and it was because I wasn’t getting enough calcium. Now, I really watch how much I’m getting but it’s not something that just happens in a vegan diet automatically. You do have to add it up and pay attention.

sesame seeds are high in calcium too, Tahini made from sesame is rich in calicium

Thank you Dr. Barnard, I have always and lately tried to eat more greens for calcium, although I wish that a pill would help, bec it's easier. but greens, here I come.

Most of the world gets by just fine on less than 500mg of calcium intake per day, without having to consume glasses of milk every day. The human body only excretes 100-300mg of calcium per day.

Cows have the enzymes to digest the grass that have the calcium but us humans are simply not very tolerable to that digestion of grass .. but when we drink milk or yogurt we get the good bioavailable calcium

I've been looking for a video like this, thank you! What I can't see however is how you can get the recommended 1000 mg of calcium per day out of greens? For example broccoli has 47 mg of calcium per 100 grams. Kale has 150 mg per 100 grams. Could someone comment please?

I eat brocoli and spinach daily and other calcium rich vegan foods like kale, almonds, dates... but NEVER hit the 1000 mg calcium target, 60% at most (I use the Cronometer app). So do you have to eat 2 pounds of greens or what? I would concider eating a can of sardines, but yeah I'm trying to stay vegan. You make it sound so easy, same goes for iron.

Hello Doc, I'm not a milk or cheese person anyway. I do love greens. I also do a high fat diet. A carnivorous diet. Love greens but since I got older, it gives me bad gas and discomfort. I have always been interested in plant based. But I really have horrible gas issues .I'm not against veganism, I think it's great. I wish I could be that way, I love greens, beans, all the vegan recipes. So to all you vegans I respect you. I have problems with the one's that attack and degrade people. Everyone is different. Any suggestions? I hope one day to be plant based, I'm an endurance and calistenics addict. Love y'all.

Simply use curry leaves and moringa and your calcium will skyrocket

You don't get a lot of calcium from plants. My daughter is 5 and about to start growing her adult teeth and I'm worried about this. 1000mg apparently a child of her age needs. That's 3 glasses of milk. But to eat broccoli it only has 35mg per serving. Other sources not much more.

Yeah, the vegan gurus say this is possible but I've not seen one of them put out a doable plan without fortified foods that puts the walk to the talk.
