5000 for even .5 acre is pretty optimistic.

The biggest hurdle is land and places where building code allows this. But i dream of doing this and been searching land the past months

Like how you included that tin roofed builing in the rain water collection... but never mentioned building a tin roofed building...

1. Build a building for water collection. 2. Sleep in a tent.

And make sure to do it where it doesn’t snow

this is a cool concept, but i would estimate the baseline cost much higher.

land costs are definitely going to be higher for most of the US. and if youre finding land for $5000, you might get what you pay for...

if you live somewhere with an actual winter, youre going to need a real insulated structure with a suitable heating system.

i know what its like to be burning wood all day and still be cold...

I wish there was info about doing this in remote locations like where I live. Away from the west

In New Mexico for sure, in northern Canada you’re dead in January under - 45 with the wind.

Well I live in the uk am disabled and live off benefits and have maybe £50 left at the end of a month so no way I’m gonna have £15k to send on it.
What I can do is empement some of your idea in my own way. Like water harvesting- got land- use the garden…. The toilet I have provided for me and shelter by the government at no cost to me.

Cooking yes that’s hard one and solar is hard as I would need the money. Maybe in 10 years I would have enough to get solar panels on my shed roof.

I only payed $5k for my mobile home. Most “off grid” videos are blowing money left and right. If you want to be off grid you don’t want to have to buy land (your now on the grid). solar panels and a couple of solar power banks works. I would find somewhere near a river or lake for food and water. A tent and micro stove? No. Unless you are just going to be there for the season, it’s not going to be enough. You need a hard structure, and a better stove. There are videos of people building small log one room log and mud room. Find a small stove that doesn’t come apart in panels. I wouldn’t want that thing to drop embers. And it being air tight edges keeps it from running away and over heating the steel or causing a chimney fire which would cause that tent to catch fire.

Is an electric cooler really enough to store all the food I’d need?

On my country it would be around 10 times that.

canvas tent would hold up great in strong storms and they would hold up great to mold and mildew .. cant think of a better choice to live in .. esp in the elements that canvas tent would be super insulated and keep you warm in the winter .. sounds great .. that canvas tent would also be super effective at keeping mice and raccoons out of your house too.. and the floor in that tent would never need any attention ..mud and water will magically not effect a thin plastic floor .. what could go wrong? smh

Often a 20 acre parcel is less than smaller plots. Look for agricultural zoning. Buy with multiple partners and subdivide contractually while keeping the property whole if zoning does not allow subdivision. The problem is earning a living. Low cost real estate usually means a lack of local economies that will offer an opportunity to earn money. Italy is a good buy for Europeans and the Midwest for Americans. Avoid cities that are economically depressed.

Damn thats way cheaper than i thought, compared to a rural house nowadays

Won't this require deforestation of the rural land to setup solar panels?

Is there an already set up community for this kind of living? If so, what state/city?
