No One Buys Off Grid Solar…

Specifically talking about taking the average residence and turning it into a completely off-grid home. Even the best, most expensive solar panel retrofits utilize the grid heavily.

Electrical is based off a 240 single-phase home with a 200 amp service. (50 amps at 240 volts is 12 kW)

I live off grid in the desert, in a 38ft RV powered by a 50amp 120v system. It has 2 14, 000BTU Coleman A/Cs, a full size refrigerator, 2 space heaters, 2 big screen TVs, Xbox, microwave, guitar and 100w amplifier, even washer and dryer.
My 50amp main is supplied by 18*300watt panel array charging 4 lifepo4 batteries. I spent $10, 000 6 years ago and STILL have more power than I need at any given time.. just not enough to run everything all at the same time. (We have a LPG generator for laundry on hot summer days)

My choice to go off grid was one of the the best choices I’ve ever made. I own my home, my land, my power, my water, and my vehicles. It enabled me to save ridiculous amounts at a young age. I’ve been waiting years for the batteries to die, replacement cost was saved in the first 3 months of being off grid.

My wife agrees, it was SO worth it!

The quarter of a million people currently living off grid on solar would be quite surprised to hear this.

The grid went down in our town last night. The only reason we knew about it was that we heard the backup generator at the hospital up the road, fire up. We are off grid with a system more than adequate for our needs (15.1kWof panels and 32kWh of batteries) and it didn't cost anywhere near what that dude was prattling on about. In fact, we went over the top to ensure that we have redundancy built in, just in case something fails. 3 x 5KVA inverters in parallel, single phase. 4 x MPPT solar controllers, each capable of 4.5kW output. 10 x modular LiFePO4 battery units at 3.4kWh each. We have a complete monitoring system and the whole lot is integrated with Home Assistant to automate tasks. We even have a 7.36kW EV charger, which we use regularly. I'm not sure that this dude has a handle on solar power.

My dad actually lives off grid! He has 4-5 panels (I think) and a propane powered grill, and wood heating! He doesn’t much care for the city so he decided to renovate his dads old house (which is in the middle of the woods, with no power) during winter, he has a generator because the suns out a bit less. It’s a really cool mix of old and new.

When you hire a solar technician from Wish:

I guess I am Mr Nobody. With off grid solar, you heat air, cook and heat water with gas or wood. Minimize electric use and NO problem.

Whenever you start a sentence with “nobody” or “everybody” you set yourself up to look dumb. This guy’s statement is simply not true.

I have integrated into a number of off-grid systems here in Australia. Theyre doing just fine.
