5000 PICKLES! love ya Dustin - something wholesome about your unedited talking - much prefer it than constant jump cuts of every other youtube channel...
keep up the awesome work !

I agree, when you don't need 50 or 42 Mp, like for instance, when you print for wedding albums, where 20-25 Mp are ample, you can use the extra Mp, together with careful denoising/sharpening on the original, to increase the S/N ratio of the downsampled copy.

Downsampling isn't as obvious as it might seem. The best way to obtain very sharp, clear, right colored images, without white borders, is to use an unsharp mask before doing a downsamplig. I'm using different methods for different shots.
I've made many attempts of different combinations with unsharp mask, and the best for most photos was the following:
1 Convert image to LAB,
2 Choose Light Channel,
3 Apply Unsharp Mask: Value 100; Radius 3 threshold 3 (please experiment with values here, the smaller the target image is supposed to be, the higher values are). These values are for web (about 1 Mpix images),
4 Resize Image (Bicubic resampling, enter the desired image size),
5 Convert image to RGB.
6 Done. Nothing can match those images.
I sat on this for a few years before I refined the right sequence. The best way to resize photos is to make PS action which will automate this process. Of course, I'm open to comments.

Well said Dustin. I like how you gave a high level pass discussing the results and not get into the algorithms. But on the video side, there is more detail, making the video appear more sharp.

Thanks for the video. I have been downsampling my 5Ds images to 22MP when I don't want the added resolution for some time and the results are very impressive. The 5Ds also generates very nice, downsampled in camera 22MP images which look great once some sharpening has been applied.

Going around the channel to see what new I can learn and I found this gem. Thanks

Thank you for this. I started downsampling some of my a7rii wedding photos and I can indeed see a difference in some photos! Pretty neat.

Dustin, I have never used downsampling, so excuse my stupid-sounding questions:
- Do I need to install Photoshop to do that? (I am using Lightroom for my processing of RAW files)
- Do I import the RAW files (CR2) into Photoshop?
By the way, have you tried to import Canon 6D Mark II RAW files to Photoshop and downsample to the 20.2MP sensor resolution of the 6D original? The latter has an amazing smoothness, so do you think you gain any extra benefit, given the extra 6MP of the former? Is it worth utilising downsampling for Canon 6D Mark II images? If you haven't tried it, don't worry, it's OK.
Great video, as always.
Regards,
Michael

Good explanation and samples but for most photographers its tedious because when come back from events it’s hundreds of photos and don’t have tome to that, I have 5dsr and 5dm4, use it as needed but frankly even with client album I used Mraw in 5dm4 for printing 24”X36” the images turned tack sharp .

Hi Dustin great info and reviews. I really dislike the overblown background that I've been seeing in your videos lately. Its distracting and annoying. I find myself squinting and have to lower the brightness of my screen and my screen is already at mid brightness setting. Just a thought. Have a good day

Fascinating stuff, very well explained. Thanks Dustin.

How does A7 mk3 compare to A7R3 when A7mk3 has better dynamic range? will A7R3 have similar picture quality in low light when down sampled?

IT works at one point my canon 5DS was the biggest mistake I ever made then I started down sampling
Things changed and now with Profoto A1 on the market its like what was old is new something new.

I recently also downsampling my images mainly for storage reasons, but i also learn that i don't need all that resolution every time and tbh a 10MP images is enough for my needs.
My 70D is "only" 20MP so the effect of downsampling you said doesn't affect that much i think, especially when there's cropping to the images..

The difference is that the D850 and A7R3 are versatile all round pro bodies that have great DR and high ISO despite their resolution, while the 5DSR is a highly specialized camera that only shines in resolution and the resolution compromises dynamic range and high ISO

Fascinating video filled with invaluable information! Thanks so much for this!

Question: is there a way to downsample images in Lightroom?

Hi Dustin, eagerly anticipating a 5dmk4 / A7R3 comparison. I have been shooting a year now with 6D and looking to upgrade. With an already heavy investment in canon glass I wonder if it’s advisable to get the 5d4 or whether using an adapter on the Sony works good enough?

Now they have got the pixel binning which literally adds 4 or 9 small pixel to make 1 bright huge pixel

Great video... a question, do you sharpen the TIFF before or after downsampling? thanks.
