The Battle of Ortona was fought in the Adriatic coast town from 20–28 December 1943. It saw brutal house to house fighting that destroyed much of the town. It was rebuilt and is now thriving. See what Ortona looked like during the battle 81 years ago and now.

Christmas 1943: Dead Horse Square, Ortona, Italy. So named for the principal landmark – a horse that had been killed early in the battle – this was the site of a desperate battle to dislodge the enemy from a church and a school nearby.
