Today we're looking at the Tamron 150-500mm f/5-6.7 Di III VC VXD Lens for Sony E Mount, the new budget super telephoto option that offers stellar performance for a fraction of the cost of my of the counterpart telephoto lenses for the Sony mount.

Disclaimer: Tamron sent me this lens to try, but had no say in what I say, and did not get to view this video before it was released.

So what do you think? Are you going to pick up a new Telephoto?

Thank for the video. I know that you commented on not getting a tele converter, though the 1.4x has received good reviews. I see that you showed the 2.0x which most receivers did say that picture quality does degrade with that?

Just got this lens and can't wait to shoot with it!! The sony 200-600 is way more expensive where I live and also a much bigger lens as it is internally zooming. I was also considering the sigma 150-600 but this tamron felt a lot more compact for its range. I also think the version 03 firmware has improved the performance of this lens a lot and I also don't mind the 15 fps cap as I have a a7IV. Great review and photo samples btw.

Nice review!
I add my two cents, after two years of using 150-500 and a year for 200-600 with a6600, now a6700.
I finally decided to keep 150-500 and sell 200-600. Firstly because AF difference is much smaller between them on a6700 than on a6600. Another reasons are transport ease, slighly weight savings and macro capabilities, with crop factor I could do really nice close ups, impossible to achieve even with dedicated macro because of great working distance.
Only thing I dislike about tamron 150-500 is that I wish it were native aps-c with even more weight/size savings, would insta buy such version. Another thing I dislike that after 2 years I've got 1 dust particle behind front glass, it doesn't affect image at all, even with aperture closed to maximum, but still it kills my soul inside :D

Love it. Huge fan of a budget tele. That compression looks clean.

Locally this lens is more expensive then newly coming Sigma 150-600 f/5-6, 3 so it's really tough choice to go for it unless you really need the smaller lens.

Thanks for this down to earth video with clear and understandable comments that make sense. Price at 18 April 2023 is discounted, making this lens a bit more affordable. I'm just not sure how much usage I might have for such a focal range but I see it having potential in covering events, in particular outdoor stage events, where access is difficult and reach is important. Optical performance, build quality and auto focus performance all seem pretty good to me.

Great video mate, putting that one on the list (and taking the teleconverter off haha)

Just bought the Tamron on the $200 instant discount sale. Already have tma 17-28 & 28-200 for travel photogaphy. I wanted the Sony 200-600 for wildlife, zoo, & other distant reach styles. The 100-400 doubled my 100-200 coverage and is $$$, the 200-600 while excellent for birds & wildlife, is 5in linger and too bulky to be easily toted around for travel. If I end up with a 12-24, 24-70, & 70-200, maybe I'll then swap to a 200-600. But I spent $2500 and cover 17-500mm. Swapping to the Sony GM setup would run me $8500 ish to cover 5mm more on the low end and 100mm on the high end. As an enthusiast, Tamron wins. 90% of the glass for fractions of the price.

Looking at this lens for Fuji. Apparently Fuji doesn’t limit the burst rate.

I've been eying up this one lately. I have the Sony 70-350 mm lens. Easy to carry and great general purpose. But when shooting birds if you're not close it can be disappointing. How do you find this lens hand held or do you feel a tripod or monopod is really required? Nice look at the Tamron!

Awesome Video, thanks! Short, simple and good quality 💪🏽

I think I'm going to buy it when the price drops a little, because I live in Switzerland and here it's. 2000.- at the moment...

Just picked this up and still getting used to it! It's a great lens so far, but I'll see how it handles shooting fast moving dogs soon. The Sony 100-400 is just a bit out of my price range and the Sigma 100-400 didn't cut it at all.

I was worried this video was going to say to get rid of the 100-400 and go with the Tamron, especially since I just purchased the 100-400 GM 👀

If I want to use the camera for everyday, ultrawide and super tele, would you recommend me to get Sony A7RV with Tamron 150-500mm and Sony 16-35mm F4 Power Zoom, GH5 with 100-400 and 8-18 or 9mm or Fuji XT5 with similar lenses? A7RV with the Tamron lens I can crop 2X MFT still get 1000mm and it has the unique 4 ways screen too and great EVF. Do all of them I can add extension tube to get ultramacro which is more than 1 magnification?

Hello which one would you recommend Tamron 150_500 or Sigma 150-600. Where I live Sigma is cheaper by 150$ but I heard that sigma's af is not as good as Tamron

Well I'll probably be buying the a7iv in a year or so and with it the tamron 35-150 later then the Tamron 150-500 and a wide angle I've not dicided on yet.
