--

In 1995, the British Medical Journal published a report about a builder who accidentally jumped onto a nail, which pierced straight through his steel-toed boot. He was in such agonizing pain that any movement was unbearable. But when the doctors took off his boot, they discovered that the nail had never touched his foot at all. What’s going on? Joshua W. Pate investigates the experience of pain.

“They used to think: the more severe the injury is, the more pain it should cause”

Clearly these people have never had a paper cut.

Cant my body just react to threats without me suffering?

Body: *YOU SUFFER WITH ME*

This just shows how clever our bodies are. To preempt threats and react even before there actually is. Bad for suffering. But good that our body is so reliable to responding

I have the delightful experience of living for the past 30 years with CRPS (Complex Regional Pain Syndrome). The straightforward manner in which you describe chronic pain makes this video a particularly useful aid in educating people about CRPS. It’s pretty hard to get people who have never experienced high levels of pain to empathise with someone who is in acute levels of pain all day, every day, for ever.
We don’t make it up. We can’t just ‘get over it’. We are most definitely NOT being lazy or malingering.

But the weird thing is, many of us actually ‘enjoy’ the kinds of short lived pain other people experience, such as Tattooing, piercing, very hot or very cold showers... because we can control those things...

As a person with chronic pain, I was told I will never be out of pain. It’s part of my life and sometimes my brain literally tunes out the signals until I pause to sit or relax and then the signals come rushing in.

This is ten percent pain
twenty percent pain
Fifteen percent concentrated power of pain
Five percent pain
fifty percent pain
And a hundred percent reason to remember the pain

Every pain be it physical or psychological has an underlying cause that has to be addressed. But most people don't focus on that they just keep trying various things to numb the pain, only to their dismay!

As someone who has lived with fibromyalgia for many years, this video struck a nerve... err, umm... Hit close to home. It completely makes sense. I just wish some of my doctors (and especially those reviewing disability cases) would understand how this feels. Even if there is no physical cause, the pain is real! And has real effects on life!
