Believe it or not, a good way to save money on food when traveling in Switzerland is buying from supermarket bakeries. The quality of the food is very high, and in many cases much better than the local cafes. Also, the prices are competitive, only a tad bit higher than mainland Europe. Migros is a good supermarket to get snacks.

Wow, thank you Uptin! I didn’t know that Switzerland had higher rent than other European countries. Another great video!

I made a personal comparison between NY and Zurich food prices.. I live in NYC for 13 years and visited switzerland couple of times and stayed about a month on August 2022. I always checked restaurant menus when I walked around. Ex around bahnhofstrasse or near the lake. I see prices such as pasta for 27 - 32 chf and salad places such as "Not guilty" for like around 20-22 chf or a take out poke for 26chf.
In NYC, nice pasta restaurant also is 27-35$ + tax + tip, Salad places such as *sweetgrees* is around 12- 16$ + tax, poke is like 15 to 18$ + tax
So this is what I realized,
A. when you dine in - NY is more expensive than Zurich because in zurich 30chf pasta is 30chf vs NYC 30$ +8%tax + 18-20% tip, wc at the end is $38.2!
B. When you do take out (fast and easy meals/food) like salad bars.. Zurich is more expensive. Prices starts around 18- 20chf vs Salad in NYC usually starts 8$ and u build and ends up around 14$ and no tip!

I'm currently in Switzerland staying for a month. While I Totally agree that restaurant prices are insane, I was very surprised that most of consumer staples goods are pretty reasonably priced. The other day I got a 16oz body lotion for $3.

When i was in Switzerland, we shopped at Co-op and Aldi. The prices weren't that much higher compared to where i live

#2 doesn’t make sense at all strong currency means imported goods are cheaper, not more expensive. I get your points about economies of scale that can increase price but a high currency impacts pricing for exports making it expensive to others buying externally.

I live in geneva but you miss some points, about visa, safety and innovation. For an introduction video about switzerland it is ok but why not providing more economics indicator like gdp, minimal wages etc

Wrong, the more expensive countries in the world are Great Britain, Canada and United States.

Singapore is a great country. No drugs and no homeless. A country that actually punishes criminals.

It’s crazy how Singapore, country with higher take home salary than Switzerland is a lot more affordable in term of food and other essentials. You can get lunch for $4SGD or $3USD in Singapore and it can be the best dish you’ll ever have (sometimes Michelin star dishes for $3USD!). These expensive European countries can really learn from Singapore and subsidise food, it’s literally the most essential thing a person needs. Not to mention, their gov also subsidises other essentials such as housing, high quality education and healthcare, basically everything a person needs. At the end of 2022, there were 638 homeless people in Singapore, yes they can count their homeless people!! That’s just crazy.

3:08 I disagree with point 3. Strong currency makes things better for import and worse for export. Strong US dollar means american purchasing power is high and american goods exported are expensive

Switzerland has its own game. What we think expensive is just regular daily basis to them

Here in New York you can find a breakfast for 2 costing $40.

4:13, if you want something cheap go online and import it. Labour costs are the main reason for the prices in switzerland because there is a high demand for labour, there were 400, 000+ jobs were avalible in 2022.

Another great video. Thank you Uptin. Can you please explain why imported goods can be expensive because of the exchange rate? If Swiss has a stronger currency, the import has to be cheaper, isn't it?
