Scientists accidentally made a chilling discovery in this region of the ocean. Today, we take a look at what these scientists discovered in thus region of the ocean #youtubeshorts

Scientists have discovered a frightening underwater lake in the Gulf of Mexico. Normally you would not expect a lake to be found under the water because a lake is a large sea of water that is surrounded by land. It is dangerous because the lake water is saltier than the surrounding water.

Thank you for watching!

Thank you to CO.AG for the background music!

There are brine pools like this all over the gulf of Mexico. It wasn't just discovered, isn't some rare thing and isn't an unexplained mystery.

I’ve never been as spontaneously pissed at someone butchering a subject I like as this moment

You actually can't swim to get here.... unless you can hold your breathe for several thousand feet just to reach the underwater brine pool....

Considering it's depth, I don't think anyone will accidentally swim into it 🤔

Isn't this a bit deep for human swimmers?

Narrator: *listing all the properties of the brine lake like its new information*
Me: yeah, it's a brine lake... because it's a brine it's called a brine lake.... oh my god!

Scientists have known about these brine pools for decades. I remember watching one documentary where they tried to send a submersible into the pools and they couldn’t break the surface. The submersible just bounced off the top of the pool.

Sooo, don't breath in the water in that area? Got it...

"this is why people who consciously swim to the area never come back"

yes, that tends to happen when you reach bone crushing pressures.. let alone reach the brine pool

There are actually freshwater lakes inside the ocean as well, interestingly enough. But that lake isn't just a brine pool?

Everyone else is talking about how this isn't some mysterious phenomenon and that they don't pose any threat to surface swimmers, meanwhile I'm over here furious at the fact that he just defined a lake as "a large sea of water".

Thanks for letting me know, I was thinking about taking a dip. Phew.

Yes that’s called a brine pool, they’re a feature that’s been known about in the ocean for..quite some time, it may have been fascinating when we first stumbled upon them in submersibles but they are relatively well understood now as conglomerations of water with an extremely high salt content. Due to being denser than the ocean around it it seeps down into the sea floor and forms a “lake”, the salt content is so high that animals coming into contact with it go into toxic shock, sink and die from asphyxiation inside the unbearably dense salty liquid.

*also as far as I know there aren’t any high enough to be swam to lmao*

Brine pool. Well documented and relatively common, there’s really no mystery to them.

So gad I came across this whilst pulling up my speedos as I was about to set off from the North Sea.
What a waste of time that would've been.
Thanks 😊

Scientist s don't refer to water body salt content by "more salty" it's referred to as the "salinity content"....

It’s a brine pool, nothing rare or unheard of . It’s essentially a concentrate of the oceans salt 🧂 It’s literally like being a slug and getting salt dumped on you or putting salt on your icy steps if you were to enter . It strips your body of all of its water . Idk I read it somewhere
If you put a ton of salt in a glass of water, it’s going to sink . And with the high pressure in the ocean, it just sits there

As if anyone will accidentally swim there, under the sea, 🤣

Oh yeah, swim/free dive to the bottom of the ocean!
